Could this word also mean 'to request?'

Yes. But I wouldn't use it in this sentence, as it sounds a bit too formal. It's just two apples... :)

I typed "He requests two apples" and it was accepted.

Is there a difference between "a cere" and "a întreba"?

a întreba = to ask something (to ask a question)
a cere = to ask for something (to request something)

Without context, impossible to understand the two first words "El cere". Thanks to slow audio.
