Today I finally finished my German tree after 8 months of hard work and study. I still don't have all of the words mastered of course but I know so much more than I did 8 months ago! Thank you duolingo team for all the hard work you put into making this amazing and successful language learning site. I now have made the German language a part of my life. I watch German youtube videos, listen to German radio, and Skype people in Germany on a regular basis. My German Language journey is only beginning but I now have a great foundation to build on. Thanks guys your the best!

Doesn't it feel like you've opened a door to a different world? :-) On a discussion board like this, and in many international situations in real life, one can easily but wrongly get the impression that the whole world speaks English... But once you start understanding other languages, you see that different languages convey different feelings, put emphasis on different things, etc. I don't mean that you can't translate these feelings and meanings if you set out to do it, but that you tend to think differently when you use a different language.

And the great thing is, there are so many more doors to open... I can see your Spanish door is already firmly ajar!

I made a commitment at the beginning of the year to do a new lesson every three days to keep me progressing at a steady pace. It works great, I study for two days then learn learning something new. I am now doing that with my Spanish tree and will do that for all of my other trees that I start as well.

Congrats. This gives me more motivation to go further along into my tree even though its becoming more difficult (I can never remember where to put the negative words or which words are used in the dative case).

I highly recommend that you get the following apps to improve your german further: 1. Tagesschau German News 2. ARD 3. ZDF. The last two are like PBS in the US and you can watch relatively simple stories and movies. They are mostly murder mysteries or love stories but with proper language. You will make leaps. Just as an fyi I am a German native speaker.

Maybe Johann, Johannes, Hanke or Jan. Although it comes from the same root as John, so Hans is also correct.

Congrats, have some lingots :) (no need to thank me for those though, translating gave me way too much!) I've also been doing German for some months now, and I've just reached the last lessons of the tree. I regret not immersing myself more into the language earlier on. I am curious though - how do you find understanding speech compared to reading it? When I watch anything in German I often find myself completely lost because of the speed of native speakers. Last time I started learning a language was 12 years ago, so I have no idea what a natural progression is like..
