Has anything funny or embarrassing happened to you when you were practicing speaking the language you were learning? My dad once heard some Afrikaans speaking in their language and asked a friend what they had said. After telling the man the word, he was informed that the one word he had learned was a cuss word!!

I was trying to describe my favorite cookie, which is a Tollhouse cookie with chocolate chips and nuts. I don't know how to say "chocolate chips" in Spanish but I worked my way around it by saying "small pieces of chocolate" and I was feeling quite proud until I said "y huesos" instead of 'y nueces". It got very, very quiet and someone explained to me that I had said I like cookies with bones >.<

I do that a lot... I remember part of how a word sounds but can't quite get the whole thing. That "ues" sound in the middle really tripped me up!

You have excellent judgment, Usagi. I am now sorely tempted to make you a batch of Tollhouse cookies. X'D

So, my friend was auditioning for a music grad program and after the audition the professors asked her: "So, who are you staying with?" "Oh, I'm sleeping with Ana and Berto" And when they laughed she couldn't understand why. In any case, nobody thought she was having a hot threesome that night.

I was at an airport waiting for our flight back home (i was on vacation!). unfortunately, our flight was delayed :(. these 2 Korean ladies walked up to us and started talking........ in Korean. they didn't speak a word of English and they needed a phone to call their sister, who DOES speak English, because they didn't know what was going on. so as they were going off in Korean it was just me and my mom trying to figure it out. now, i didn't know it was Korean, i thought it was Japanese (i have an extremely hard time telling differences between Asian languages). so, guess what i said? I said "Kon'nichiwa". one gave me a funny look and the other laughed. i was so embarrassed (her sister on the phone explained that they were speaking Korean, not Japanese)

My former German professor could really speak Spanish but, of course, everybody makes mistakes. I can't remember what he was trying to explain but he said in Spanish to the class: "So, [this phrase in German] is like saying "yo estoy bueno". And then everybody laughed. He was trying to say "I am good", not "I am hot"...

My Spanish teacher, a native English speaker, stayed for a year in Spain. One night, she was hanging out with friends at a restaurant and commented on the food. Everyone went quiet and gave her weird looks. Aware that she probably said something wrong, she said, "Estoy embarazada", thinking the word was a cognate for "embarrassed". Unfortunately, she brought more of it upon herself, as it means "pregnant".
