It must be nap time.

What's the difference between this and "The babies are crying"?

How do we differentiate between a specific set of babies who happen to be crying on the one hand, and a habitual behavior of babies as a class on the other?

It might be better translated into English as, "The kids are crying"

Why? Isn't kids just a synonym? And even a bit of a slang term?

It's a little bit informal but it's hardly slang.

It would have to be "babies are crying".

"Babies crying" would be several different things depending on the sentence, but one way would be watoto wanaolia "babies (who are) crying".
