Suggestion: Vocabulary feature. A little note for those of you who don't know :)

Hi, Thank you Duolingo team for creating this awesome web site. I can see more and more people who are asking about the Vocabulary feature and why it is gone. (it is a good thing) . I suggest that the Vocabulary button should be back and when you press it you immediately have this message. It would help new users to know all the information right there. Who likes the idea please upvote it , so that people from Duolingo would notice it :)

Good idea. I personally liked the way it worked before as well. Unfortunatly I found the function just before they took it away. But this is a good suggestion. I think that one of the reasons that so few knew about it is that they might not use a computer and therefor won't see these awesome features.

This would be a fantastic feature....I really need it! It's duolingo's biggest lacking thing! A vocab list is definitely necessary.

Sadly, Duolingo wasn't lacking this feature until a bit over a month ago. They decided to revamp the Vocabulary tools, but inexplicably thought that removing it entirely pending the changes was a better idea than leaving the existing functionality in place until the revamped version was ready. I'm one of Duolingo's biggest fans and think they do very few things wrong, but that decision was truly boneheaded.

Dear Pinkodoug,

Agreed, so I voted you up, but I personally cut them some slack. I imagine the vocabulary section was badly code-fragmented, so they're having to start from scratch to do it as a single cross-platform code-base, which will be compatible with the new site design. The old one almost certainly wasn't, and you can understand that their excitement to push the new 'improved' design trumped other considerations.

But that's speculation on my part, since their development process is not very transparent.... I like to imagine a few polyglot programmers, spread out among several continents, spending most of their time translating each others' code from C++ to Lisp to Perl and back. ;-)

According to Duo devs, the backend is almost entirely written in Python (I can't recall which web framework they use off the top of my head), and the front end is obviously javascript with heavy reliance upon libraries like backbone.js, jQuery and mustache. DB servers are a mix of Amazon's DynamoDB and MySQL depending on the type of data.

I don't buy the argument (that's been made by others before) that it wasn't possible to leave the existing system in place while developing its replacement. The fact that much of the old vocabulary system's existing functionality remains in place and is accessible either by direct linking (e.g. this or that - Note: these will only work if you've completed the first lesson or two of German) or via xydrolase's userscript (available here) belies that notion. While it's certainly possible that some backend changes may have required disabling some of the vocabulary system's functionality, much of it could have remained in place.

Now, I'll agree that there was a labor and time cost associated with the minor updates required to allow users to continue to use the vocabulary system until the new version is ready; I've said so elsewhere on these forums, in fact. Unfortunately, a decision was made that this cost wasn't worth it, and so we have the gaping hole in Duolingo's functionality that many of us complain about. I would argue that the cost of updating all or at least most of the vocabulary system's functionality wasn't terribly substantial (like you, I'm operating on some assumptions here, though they're bolstered by a bit of evidence as well as my own experience on much smaller applications - thousands of users rather than millions haha) and that failing to do so was, as the saying goes, penny wise but pound foolish.

I miss the vocabulary feature as it used to be with the opportunity to practice individual words. I hope that the new improved version has even more options for practicing words that have already been presented. I especially need practice for verbs that were introduced and only used a few times since then. It was also encouraging to see the list of things I had learned. Please bring it back soon, Duo!

I noticed it missing when I finally got ready to enter some of the really useful words/sentences into an Anki deck for future memorization. Since it's been gone I've been checking the site (since I mainly use the app for language learning) every few days to see if it's come back.

I miss you Vocabulary, please come back soon...

Until the vocabulary tools are returned to us, check out the vocabulary list that I've posted in the Spanish forum (I've made a German list, too). The Spanish version contains the full Spanish vocabulary list organized by skill section. It includes links to, among other things, the Duolingo vocabulary entries for each word, which includes the sample sentences, conjugations and more. Also, another Duo user, xydrolase, has created a user script for Chrome and Firefox that makes this information easier to access and formats it so that it's presented in a more organized fashion than it is currently. Details about it can be found here.

I agree and thank you duolingo for the promise to bring it back. Another thing is that it would bee very pleasant if there was a feature so you could hear a Spanish pronunciation when you have written a correct translation. Henriklone

Hi, I'm new to Duolingo and it seems to be what I need, however I may have missed something. I went through the first beginners exercises and on starting the second was asked to translate words that I had never seen before. Now seeing this discussion I can't wait to see the vocabulary tool in place to give me a fighting chance

Dear DuoLingo;

Please define "soon".

It has now been several weeks since the redesign that removed the vocabulary tab and Marcel wrote the following:

I can guarantee you that in our efforts to bring all of you the best learning experience, we haven’t seen the last of the vocabulary page. We still believe that learning a language largely depends on having a huge vocabulary, and once we come up with a good way to integrate it across all platforms it will come back. -https://www.duolingo.com/comment/1538409

Surely, it can't be that difficult to integrate the vocabulary section that remains hidden from our view. I hope nobody at DuoL imagines that if it's gone for long enough, people will forget that it ever existed and stop asking for it.

I have lots of extra Lingots. I'd happily give them up to have the Vocabulary Tab returned.

Thank you, pinkodoug. That's good to hear. I'm cynical and expect that it will be later rather than sooner that the revamped Vocabulary Tab appears. So, when it doesn't reappear as soon as projected, I promise I'll wait until at least June before asking again.
