Now for more verbs to add in your vocabulary. Malay verbs are kinda tricky to understand but for now these verbs below wouldn't make any confusion of its usage.


A little grammar note first.

  • Transitive verb

  • A verb that requires a direct object.

  • Eg. I like you. (like=transitive, you=direct object)

  • Intransitive verb

  • A verb that does not requires a direct object.

  • Eg. I jump. (jump=intransitive)

Some verbs though can be both transitive and intransitive.

  • مڽاڽي / menyanyi

/mə.ɲa.ɲi/ - to sing (intransitive)


  • مميليه / memilih

/mə.mi.lih/ - to choose


  • داتڠ / datang

Kanak-kanak lelaki itu sedang menulis sepucuk surat. - The boy is writing a letter.

Mereka tidak menulis. - They do not write./They are not writing.

Itik-itik ini sedang berjalan. - These ducks are walking.

Budak-budak perempuan itu berenang. - The girls swim.

Saya boleh nampak kamu! - I can see you!

.دي ملومڤت

Dia melompat. - He/She jumps.

Kami tidak boleh menyanyi. - We cannot sing.

Anjing-anjing itu berlari. - The dogs run.

؟کامو ماهوکه مينوم جوس اورين

Kamu mahukah minum jus oren?. - Do you want to drink orange juice?

Saya membayar. - I pay.

.کامي تيدق بوليه ممباير ماکنن اين

Kami tidak boleh membayar makanan ini. - We cannot pay this food..

Wanita itu sedang menjual buah-buahan. - The woman is selling fruits.

As in, I found you! It is differ from searching.

Ramai kanak-kanak sedang bermain. - Many children are playing.

Kita sedang membasuh seluar-seluarnya. - We are washing his/her trousers (pl.).

This lesson will hold you for a while for now.

There's a lot to learn about Malay verbs since there are affixes that need to be consider that can change the entire meaning of a verb.

This is good, thank you! Do you have any resources that can explain when it is possible to drop me- prefix? I understand that always included the me- prefix can sound too bookish in spoken Malay/Indonesian.

It's pretty hard to find an online resource for Malay and that makes learning Malay independently nearly impossible. Based on my understanding, the verbs above with prefix meN- can be omitted. The prefix helps people to know that the verb is an active verb and sometimes show that the verb is currently being done. I'll be reviewing more and improve the lessons here for better understanding. Thanks for learning!
