Is there another word for generic soup? I know what cawl is and it is a very good soup indeed but it's very specific.
Cawl on its own is a broth but it is also used as the generic word for all types of soup.
eg cawl cennin a thatws = leek and potato soup
cawl tomato = tomato soup
potes is another word sometimes used for soup, but cawl seems to be more common.
Spanish tip: "caldo".
Any relation to English "cauldron?"
No; it's related instead to "kale, cauli(flower), cole(slaw), col(lard greens)" -- all are ultimately loanwords from Latin caulis (originally "stem, stalk", later used to refer to cabbage).
Marvelous to see how latin evolved..! The spanish word caldo , meaning a very light broth.
