I don't know how widespread this is, but in my country (the Netherlands) there is a specific flower closely associated with spring: the krokus (I think it's crocus in English). When the krokussen start flowering, as happened last week where I live, you know spring is coming! Our spring school holidays are sometimes even called the krokusvakantie.

In Poland, crocus is also associated with spring, but the first flower and one the most associated with coming spring is snowdrop, or przebiśnieg. The Polish name is made from przebić "to pierce" and śnieg "snow". So the name can be understood as meaning "snowpiercer".

Cool! We call those sneeuwklokjes (snow bells) :) I'd say we associate them more with the end of winter, if that makes sense.

Lines On What I Imagine The Weather's Like In Australia

Autumn's umber
Clothes the lumber
Raindrops in great number
dripped us.

Cold wind hurtles
through the myrtles
And the woods of
Eucalyptus.

Nothing hot'll
Warm the wattles
Or the bottle-
-brush or ferns;

An Antipo-
-dean tripper
Best wait till the
Spring returns.

(Should this verse have made a blunder,
Be there errors in this song:
Hear, I've never been Down Under
Largely-owing-to-the-fact-that-I-couldn't-possibly-stand-sitting-in-an-aeroplane-for-that-long.
