I am mostly on my mobile while using Duo and have been constantly nagged by Duo to upgrade. So I upgrade since I thought that if they went to so much effort to do more coding that it needed an upgrade, let's upgrade and enjoy a better Duo, right? WRONG. In the beginning we enjoyed a straightforward and educational Duo and that was it. Nice and ad free. Now we have to literally spend our mobile money for a month of no annoying ads?? Why not use all those useless lingots collecting dust? And the Duo owl popping in every 3 sentences to say pointless things like "3 in a row, look at you go!" LIKE WTH??? Instead of spending all that time on coding to say something useless, why not make him say something that would contribute something useful like a grammar tip? Shoving adverts in every exercise is making the exercises feel like advert junk spam mail. It's ruining the vibe of why people joined in the first place. Next we will be paying real money to 'unlock' language courses. Who knows... maybe to even simply log on? Want to add some useful code to Duo? How about the option to turn off all the pictures in the exercises so that it doesn't become too easy? Or maybe the pictures get turned off after a certain level?

Duolingo has said that they try to make it harder, but when they do, the number of users goes down.

Use the browser version. It's much, much better.

You can still access the browser version.

Google "Duolingo", but instead of tapping the main page, go to one of the sub-pages, like "Courses". This will make it so the app doesn't open, and you can go around the site like you normally would.

Yes the new ad thing has really turned me off too. I really didn't mind the ads when they had that familiar green continue button to skip them with. Now you have to try to hit the tiny x in the top left corner while at the same time trying not to trigger the ad link accidentally. The duo app is no longer any better than any other run of the mill education app and yet it only took a few simple steps to get to this point, please duo, don't upgrade it any worse.

It isn't Duolingo that nags you to upgrade, that's just how the app store works.

The adverts are indeed annoying, but Duolingo needs to raise money somehow, and adverts are one of the ways it can do so.

Duolingo have said again and again that they won't ever change for access to any of the courses, though.

...the owl flying in all over the place, though - yes, it's juvenile, and I can't imagine who would like it.

Next we will be paying real money to 'unlock' language courses. Who knows...

Have you missed all the threads about IOS Health / gems and paying the refill with real money?
They are already testing it...

I agree:

  • The owl could be doing much more. Like native recorded voice...
At least the owl crashes seem to be fixed with Android V3.42.1 :-)

  • The learning software "Digital Publishing" on the other side uses a teacher, with animated picture, native recorded sound.
You might find it annoying having the teacher talk that often - the speaker even does some slap sticks when you are in idle mode. But it is nice to hear "something" native, especially if you start from scratch.

  • Even www.50languages.com provides native recorded MP3 audio for their 100 days free course and the levels also include real sentences / phrases.

Do you hear that DuoLingo staff?
They provide - like some Memrise Basic/1-7 courses - REAL PHRASES which you can actually make use of.
Aren't we learning a language to learn how to speak and use it in our life / conversations?
.

  • Have you heard about Memrise EU courses and "Meet the natives" videos?

IMHO there is lots of room for improvements.
I also want to get presented something "interesting" between the lesson, with a real benefit.

What I however like about the Android app:
The words pair match game between lessons or select from three words. This is not available on the web

I don't mind the adverts so much. Duo is free and so if they get some money from the ads no biggie to me although it is annoying. The little owl popping up is a bit irritating though I'll agree with you there.

The good thing is, you can do an APK downgrade (manually from APK archives) :-)
