"I like the Mediterranean sea."
Translation:Dw i'n hoffi Môr y Canoldir.
I thought dw i'n hoffi'r Mor y Canoldir would be accepted? Is 'the' not necessary in this case?
The first 'r/yr/y is not used in Welsh:
- Môr y Canoldir - The Mediterranean Sea
- Lliw y car - The car's colour ('the colour of the car')
- Canol y dref - The town centre ('the centre of the town')
This is explained in one or other of the Hints and Tips - I cannot remember which one, sorry.
Here is a brilliant video explaining how to translate possession from English to Welsh:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUuvCwOHs2c&list=PLz6oFM0_IszzhwR7gn_tSj5w4eBgqnpaO
In this example if the English is rewritten to:-
the sea of the mediterranean
You delete the first 'the' and 'of' which gives = 'sea the mediterranean' which then translated to 'Môr y Canoldir'
