Please help me to help others

Bom dia or Good morning fellow Portuguese learners. I have a request. First, let me explain why. So many native Portuguese speakers (on both sides of the pond) have helped me in learning Portuguese (LOL this is a lifelong endeavor), that I would like to return the favor.

I am putting together a list of good movies or TV series that also use 'good English'. For example, the content must be good, but the actors must also speak clearly. In other words, something like "The Dukes of Hazzard" would not be good because of the thick regional accents.
So far, I have the TV series Monk on the list. I would like to have at least 10 entries, because, you know, that is a nice round number. Thank you for your input. I will post the final list, which will be ever growing, on the Inglês de Português discussion board. Obrigado.

I would recomment 'Enterprise', whatever crew you like. Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Archer - you name it. Most members of the crew speak very clearly and only short sentences, Picard: 'Make it so.'

The spanish versions/translations helped me a lot with getting a grip on the spanish language. I think these series are a good starting point in any language. Most DVD-Versions in the EU they contain the following languages: English (of course), spanish, french, german. Sometimes italian.

Thank you. I had not considered Science fiction, but you are so right. There is also at least one crewmember with a European accent, so this is an added bonus. Yes, I learned the term "replicate" in Spanish by watching STTNG on the Spanish channel, and sometimes I have quoted Mr. Worf while sharing the roads with bad drivers. "Hoy es un buen día para morir". Hahaha. If you need me, I will be in my ready room, you have the bridge Number 1. Engage!

Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, Falling Skies, Dexter and so many others are still helping me to improve my english skills. But, the north-american southern accent is very hard to understand for me.

Thanks for the list. If you would like to listen to the southern accent, there are some reality shows set in the deep south. Duck Dynasty and Swamp People are both set in Louisiana. Although some of the Swamp people have a "Cajun accent".

Survivorman with Les Stroud. He speaks very clearly, and he explains what he is doing.

Thank you. Maybe the show with Bear Grylls would be good too.

My old Portuguese teacher told me she learned English from watching "Friends".

I'll second that, most north americans sitcoms have very good dialog, Friends was a pretty big show that aired from 1994 to 2004 (10 seasons total). A good exercise for me was watching the episodes in English with English subtitles (once I've bought the DVDs), great way to improve your listening skills and also learn a lot of US cultural lingo and slang!

Definitely second Doctor Who. I'd say they use pretty clear (although mostly British) English. The spinoff Torchwood features more of the Welsh accent, which has grown to become my favourite English dialect.

Another great suggestion. I see HIMYM as a TV show with many similarities to Friends :)!
