Tree 3.0 has begun A/B testing!
A/B testing has begun, everyone! 50% of you have access to the new tree version. If it performs well, it will reign supreme! Please help us through this process by continuing to submit error reports (in the exercises themselves) and feedback (on this thread).
Tusen takk, alle sammen!
This is amazing. Thank you for all the hard work you put into it!
I was almost finished with getting tree 2.0 completely gilded, just a few basic lessons were still missing, but learning new things is so much more thrilling!
There will be a message atop your home screen alerting you to it. I don't remember exactly what it says, but probably that there have been some changes/updates to your tree.
It says something like, "Notice something different? We've updated the Norwegian tree to make it more effective."
If we can't, there's always fiddling with the HTML in "Inspect Element".
The new tree only contains rows with 1 and 2 skills per row. If you see a row with 3 skills, you still have the old tree.
Just started in on the new skills/lessons - thanks so much for putting in the effort to continually improve this course!
I love it so far - so many of the words are ones that I wondered about while learning those lessons before!
Denne kursen imponerer meg mer hver dag. :)
I have hardly recovered from my amazement regarding the step from Tree 1 to Tree 2, and now secretly a Tree 3 has been build! Where do you find the time to do all this remarkable work ?! Last time I was lucky to be in the 'new' 50%, this time evidently I am stuck with the old tree, but then, I should better keep quiet and keep working on finalizing that one. And then, sometimes we forget that the aim is to learn Norwegian, not to finish trees ...
amazing that norwegian is on 3.0 and some languages (spanish, swedish, italian, etc) aren't even on 2.0 I don't think
Got the new tree. :) It is amazing, how big the Norwegian tree is. A lot longer than the others I am practicing with.
Cool I have the "Tre Tre". It's bigger than ever and super awesome. It's like a baobab, it's huge. Love it. Thanks guys, you never disappoint us learners.
Haha...I can't help but chuckle that, just as soon as I start to think I'm about to finish the course, there's another update to push me back again... ;)
But, really, I love it. It's about the learning, not the tree--the journey, not the destination. Out of all the courses I've taken here, Norwegian definitely feels like the most thorough of them all. Thanks for all your hard work!
I'm about halfway through the new tree and it's looking GREAT! Thanks so much for all your hard work!! :-D
Thanks so much for updating the tree! I was wondering how to ask for someone's name, and now its in phrases. Also, may I ask if there will be a "words" tab eventually such as the spanish version?
Thanks for the feedback about names! The "words" tab is up to Duolingo HQ. That's out of our control.
In my tree, there's a skill called [delete] right after the food an animal skills. It appears to be some kind of bonus skill but it doesn't have any lessons inside it.
Jeg er så spent. Mer Norsk å lære! Jeg håpe alle oss få det snart. Takk for alle harde arbeidet. (hopefully that's correct or at least readable.)
Au da ! Tilbake til den norske barnehagen ! And thank you for hindering the development of degenerative diseases of our nervous systems :)
Hi so I have Tree 3 but when it switched some of the skills I'd already learnt (which were gold) switched to not having been learnt at all? Perhaps an error to look into?
That means that the skills have been updated; likely they've had some new words added.
It means I have to do the entire 'destiny' section again!
I'm sure I'm going to die, that and the philosophy section were so weird.
Hi! It isn't an error! For example "Phrases" got a new section, so it became blue again. :)
By how much has the course been extended? I'm curious about some course metrics. I'm also sad that I don't have the new tree. :'(
It's a much less drastic transition from Tree 2.0 to Tree 3.0 than it was from Tree 1.0 to Tree 2.0. There are a couple hundred new words, a couple new skills, but nothing that major.
Looks like I'm one of the lucky ones who got the new tree.
Are there any new sections or is it just a refining and expansion of previous ones?
Has anything from the old tree been removed other than bugs and whatnot?
Thanks to the team for being an active parent to your brainchild!
There are three new skills (Compounds, Literature, Games), but the content is recycled, meaning that we sourced words from other skills to create these more thematic skills.
Compounds in particular is something we've been wanting to teach in a more focused way, rather than as words scattered throughout the course. Gathering them all in one skill allows us to offer Tips & Notes which better explain the concept and the different ways in which we form compounds.
As for removed words, two words have been replaced with synonyms or near-synonyms, while three non-essential words have been removed completely.
You can refer to our changelog for new, replaced, and deleted words.
Thanks for mentioning the log. It will make editing my memrise course much easier.
Bare hyggelig! Keep in mind that only the words marked as "GJORT" made the cut this time around.
Eeeeeee så spennende! Lykke til med A/B-testinga, håper alt går kjempebra. May tre tre reign supreme!
I'm currently learning Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, German, Dutch, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Esperanto, and Russian daily. Norwegian already had the best Duolingo program, and that's even much more the case now! Keep it up!
I wish I had the new tree :( I'm 76/114 skills into the tree and was reguilding everything before continuing. hopefully by the time I reguild, I'll get the 3.0 tree (and then will have to reguild again). either way, I love this language and am more than okay with getting my level way up there before finishing the tree
Is there an approximate timescale for when those of us who aren't in the lucky 50% will get tree 3.0?
It depends on how conclusive the test results are (and how much we nag), but either way we're likely talking several months.
Several months? These things take time I suppose. Sad times :( Thanks for replying!
Bare hyggelig! Yes, the wait is pretty frustrating for us as well, we just have to remind ourselves that the A/B test is there to ensure quality - not to drive us mad. ;)
Oh, you'll notice. My tree was gilded with only 29 lessons left to finish 2.0 tree yesterday. Today I have 164 lessons to re-gild to the same point and then 17 lessons to finish the tree. I sure hope I get some double or triple skill completion exercises to speed things along.
What is a "double or triple skill completion exercise"? I don't think I've ever encountered that!
I think they meant that when you do the blue button 'Strengthen skills' sometimes it strengthens more than one skill in one round.
Tusen takk til laget for at oppdatere treet. Det ble noen maaneder at jeg har gjort noet norsk, men skal tilbake og sjekk ut denne oppdateringen!
Det er flott! Tusen takk! Jeg elsket treet 2.0 og jeg er glad for at det blir treet 3.0. Men jeg har ikke fått det ennå. Jeg må vente.
I'm in the test! I will report back when it's completed, I love this! I got into the 2.0 test as well, I feel blessed!
Also, I love the references to classic melodic rock music!
Eye of the Tiger! I Want to Know What Love Is! I'm eighteen and I like it!
As a side remark, I can imagine the people building the accompanying "Memrise" courses starting to get desperate….. still, I can recommend everybody to combine this Duolingo Norwegian course with the “Complete Duolingo Norwegian Vocabulary” course at Memrise, which is indeed ‘complete’ as it says, but also has sound files for all the words. You should hurry up, though, as it is based on the “old” Tree 2.0….
For those of us that do not have the new tree, could you go over some of the features of the new tree that we can look forward to?
Great, you have a Lingot from me for the wonderful news. Norwegian is the best language for me. Keep up the good work with tree skills and thank you very much. I hope that one day I will be able to talk Norwegian fluent.
I guess I am on the old tree for now.
It would be frustrating for the new tree to pop up so quickly after I finished the old one about a month ago.
It would only be frustrating if you're more interested in having the golden owl than actually learning the language
Norwegian is the most fun course I've taken on Duo so far, and I feel lucky to have gotten the extra 46 lessons. I'm constantly annoying friends with funny screenshots from the course. I spent over 6 months gilding the Norwegian tree, and I was pushed to the new tree the day after I finished my final lesson. So, no trophy for me.
I'm not going to lie to you, not getting it was a letdown.
Sure, Norwegian is more fun (takk!), but it's also twice as long as other courses. It's a lot of work. That trophy is just a jpg, sure, but I looked at it as a symbolic reward for months of work. To me, it was an accomplishment. And given the scope of the course, to me, it was a big one.
Yes, the point is to learn Norwegian, but it doesn't seem fair to say that only someone who is more interested in a jpg than a language would feel frustrated. So, I have to disagree. Respectfully, of course.
(I like being on the longer tree better than having a trophy. I'm just sayin'.)
I can understand your point of view.
What I really meant to do was just to remind that the goal in the end of the day is the learn the language, not just to "complete" trees for the sake of it. The language should remain the real objective, not the owl, in my opinion.
Thank you though for your considerate and well worded response :)
Yes, you have your priorities right! And when I get the golden owl back for Norwegian, I'll have an even greater sense of accomplishment!
I was getting really excited because I thought I was getting close to finishing Tree 2. And then I see the "does something look different?" pop up accompanied with the updated tree. So no luck finishing any time soon, but I guess I'll learn more Norwegian by the end of it.
I just feel bad because I was pushed from Tree 1 to Tree 2 when I was working through it, so I still have yet to complete a single tree. Hopefully I'll finish before the next tree!
Hei sammen I like the new tree design, the only thing which really annoys me is the fact, that I have to completely redo 9 skills and partially another 10 which are over all roughly 69 exercises. which is quite a bunch especially if you want to keep your training up and everything shiny and golden. So yeah I'm quite happy that I'm part of the testing group and that the content got updated and extended, on the other hand I was quite advanced in the tree and now I have to start over again at skills, which I have learned already for some new words. So let's see how the new tree is and if the new content will help or if it will be stuff like utenomjordisk which I use daily now. Ha det~
Does the new tree have the percent fluent piece like the German tree? Also any idea how long testing might take? I'm probably more excited than I should be to see the tree. :P
