Tree shortcuts are mastery tests accessed by clicking the labels with the keyhole symbols in your tree like this:
.

These tests let you bypass fairly large swaths of the tree if you already have some skill with the language. They're 26 question exams that test you on a variety of skills covered in lessons up to that point in the tree. If you pass, all skills to that point are instantly set to full strength and you get skill points for all of the lessons that you have not yet completed up to that point in the tree. You can fail the test a maximum of three times before you're not allowed to take the test again. Your skill strengths will decay fairly quickly using this method since you're only credited with successfully encountering each word a few times.

Additionally, each individual skill section has a "test out" option like Usagiboy7 describes. You can use them to bypass individual skills that you haven't yet completed.

After you finish some skills the 'Test out of (number) skills' button turns grey and is replaced with 'Checkpoint passed'. Scroll down below skills you have finished and you will see the yellow buttons between groups of skills.

At the bottom of the store, it says this: A lingot [ling-guht] is the Duolingo virtual currency. The more you learn on Duolingo, the more lingots you'll receive and be able to use in the store! They can be earned through:

Leveling up Earn 1 lingot Finishing a skill Earn 2 lingots for finishing a new skill 10 day streaks Earn 1 lingot for every 10 days on a streak (1 for 10, 2 for 20, etc) Note: Lingots are not awarded when you use a tree shortcut to level up or finish a skill.

The tree short cut is when you test out of skills. If you go into a skill, you'll see this option:

Here's a tip to everyone: do the skills instead if you are learning a completely new language. It will help you learn more and you can practice a lot. If you already know some stuff in a language, then I suggest you try tree shortcuts.
