Special Update!

Here's a sneak-peek of some exciting developments!

We are working as fast as possible to get quality audio exercises completed so Duolingo staff can integrate the audio/speaking exercises into the course. We are astounded that the course has nearly 40,000 learners in just 3 weeks of limited-Beta launch - this is awesome and amazing! We are hovering between 15-20 reports per 100 users. Please keep them coming and help us improve the course!

Please do note that it takes time to process and edit exercises based on feedback from reports, but they will all be addressed polepole! As I mentioned in the last update, there are some edits that we cannot make from the Incubator. One example: English, or kiingereza, is spelled kingereza right now. That is a typo, and I have submitted a request for that to be edited. We have to wait until it gets changed from a programming side, not from our Incubator side. Examples like that cannot be fixed right away, so we appreciate if you keep that in mind when providing feedback and don't get too frustrated if there are capitalization/punctuation/spelling errors like this - we are working to submit those requests to get those edited.

The Duolingo community has been very supportive and appreciative throughout these first few weeks of the limited-Beta release. Thank you again, on behalf of the whole team, for the continued assistance and feedback! We really do appreciate it. And while there have been several...uh...less-than-conciliatory-or-supportive comments made in some of the reporting (which can be disheartening - remember that Course contributors are not always 100% fluent in both languages!), the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of the feedback has been extremely, extremely helpful!

Baadaye ndugu zetu!

Emersono from Team EO for PT wrote yesterday:

TL;DR

Two new courses - Russian for Spanish, and Esperanto for Portuguese added to the incubator.

One of the highlights of the Duolingo forums. Thank you, jitengore, for the time you put into this weekly publication!

High Valyrian is now tied with Yiddish. I wish both teams the best of luck, although I must admit bias towards Team Yiddish. I hope to be able to read it one of these days, there are some truly remarkable works written in Yiddish.

Fantastic news Team Swahili! I cannot wait for audio. I am glad written comments are readable by the course teams again. I know a year or two back they were not.

As always, thank you very much for all your work Jitengore. It is deeply appreciated.

Yiddish (as far as I know) doesn't seem difficult to read. I have only studied Hebrew very briefly on duolingo and I can already sound out Yiddish words and recognize some which are cognates with German words. I am very much looking forward to trying out the Yiddish course when it is finished.

Isn't it! Quite an amazing system!

EDIT: I wrote "it isn't" by mistake XD

I doubt High Valyrian will ever get finish. How long has it been since Klingon was introduced, and still not?

March 20, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Rhabarberbarbara

And why do you think those two can be compared? They are being created by completely different teams.

March 21, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/zekecoma

Because they were really just added so that they would attract more users to Duolingo, so they would learn languages while they wait for those courses to be released.

March 24, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mizinamo

Lots of people seem to think that all courses on Duolingo are comparable, e.g. are equally well designed and when you are finished, you will be able to read the language at level "X".

March 21, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Hojinkie

I used to think that. Then Turkish came out with their detailed notes and helpful commentary in the comments. And then I discovered * with its extremely confusing notes that made me want to bang my head against a wall.

March 21, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Rhabarberbarbara

Well there are differing opinions on that, but that has little to do with the time spent in the incubator. Either way both Klingon and High Valyrian currently show (visible) progress, which cannot be said for all courses in the incubator right now. So I disagree with what zekecoma said.

March 21, 2017

High Valyrian probably will be done eventually. The guy leading the course is the person who makes the language for the TV show, and I know the other two team members a little from conlanging circles. They're all pretty hard working and serious about it. Whereas Klingon is a team of college students who (whilst they are also serious about it) have a lot of time pressure from their studies etc.

March 24, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mizinamo

Is it now?

As far as I can tell, it's mostly loghaD and I at the moment, other contributors being mostly inactive. I'm not a college student but I think loghaD may be.

But yes, neither of us has shedloads of time at the moment to devote to the course.

March 24, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/avrichard

I might be wrong then - I remember a while back communicating with one of the team members who said at that point, they were all students and their studies were getting in the way.

They might be among the inactive ones though I guess?

March 24, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mizinamo

Yes, probably.

For example, n_true contributed a bit at the beginning but he has been inactive for quite a while. He's a graduate student, I believe.

Folks, I am on the road right now and will get to create today's WIU post within 7 hours from now. Please stay tuned.

Sincere apologies! My travel took longer and then I got buried in work. I was close to taking it up during the week, but did not get to it!

Today's update is coming up in a few minutes...

Where can we see the link? :o

I find that the easiest way to spot a new update is to check jitengore's activity stream every now and then: https://www.duolingo.com/jitengore.

Did you find it?

It seems he didn't create last week's update yet. Probably he's still very busy, or he'll have to create it next week.

I adore you, man. This is so useful to see the evolution of the courses.

I'm looking forward to Japanese.

March 19, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/zyxwvutsrqpo

Take the progress from the Japanese course with a grain of salt. It has been at 15% the past 4 weeks.. But their estimated release date is mai 15th and they're Japanese. Thus they're probably making great progress, the % is most likely simply not updated.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/FilipFilip17

I like your optimism, but I’m getting worried about the lack of communication. We haven’t heard from Moeka or anyone else for some weeks now.

March 25, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mayunima

Yeah same, I am worried that it will just stop at some point. in the incubator the bar even went backwards on itself and hasn't moved for weeks now xs

March 28, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SeptimusBones

Technically the automated bar moving backwards is a good thing, because that may indicate that they are adding new empty units to the tree, which is progress.

March 28, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mayunima

Believe me, everybody is xp

I can't wait for Yiddish and I'm excited to see Esperanto for Portuguese speakers.

KLINGON RETURNS!!! Go Klingon go!

March 19, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mizinamo

Thank you :)

I'm afraid this trend will likely not continue in the short term as we will have to do some consolidation of existing material now before we can add more (visible) new material.

But progress is happening.

March 20, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TseDanylo

I don't want to come across as rude, I just have one question about the course. Is there a specific reason why progress has been so slow? Perhaps a difficult grammar section?

March 26, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/chaered

So is it true that completing the Klingon course will double your chance of getting a scholarship to the Federation Starfleet Academy?
