Happy to have lost streak
It is just after midnight here in Europe and I came to buy another streak freeze since I've been quite busy throughout the day. I was surprised to see I've lost my streak (not sure where I lost my previous freeze but the past couple of days were crazy, so OK). Anyways, Duolingo offered to restore it for $10. I was delighted! Not only I got my streak back (which I lost for 45 minutes), but I got to donate to Duolingo! I was wanting to donate back to people who keep this page running, but haven't found the way other than this!
BTW it's funny though that it offered to restore the streak on Android, but not on Web page.
Glad to see it worked for you - I've seen a couple of reports from folks saying they paid their money but didn't get their streak restored.
It's also good to know there's a way to donate to Duo. Not sure I'd risk a more-than-one-year streak on it, though! I know you didn't do it on purpose, though. Just being silly.
Is there certain criteria that has to be met to be eligible to purchase a lost streak back? For example: Within a set number of days after losing your streak etc? What if someone had a 300+ streak and lost it approximately two weeks ago. Would they be able to purchase THAT streak back? This does not pertain to me, I am just providing a scenario.
One criteria probably is: You must be in the right A/B test group.
I would not expect that it works for every user.
So I would not rely on this until there is a public announcement by the DuoLingo staff.
That makes sense. I have looked all over the forum and I haven't found anything regarding how to restore a streak through a monetary purchase. I only saw it mentioned by Duolingo users in comments like this.
I would guess the next day(s) you logon to the app and where you have not gained any new XPs / new streak, like there are no practiced days in between?!?
So far they are only offering the restore streak on the mobile app. When they stop experimenting with the prices they might put it on the web.
I'm really disappointed that I didn't get that option when I lost my 178-day streak, but I've gotten over it. I still have a finished Spanish tree to be proud of ;-)
Actually I don't have the option to restore a streak on my Android app either. I presume that this is another A/B test thing, though what it could be comparing I have no idea.
My own feeling is that sometimes losing a streak is a blessing in disguise: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/21701669
I can definitely agree with everthing you said. I was surprised that I wasn't so bothered about the lost streak either, I just used the win-win situation and donated some money.
Duolingo is obviously focusing on complete beginners and I think it does it well, but it becomes pretty mundane after doing it for 300+ days. My goal is having a golden german tree..and with the tree having 130 chapters...it becomes incredibly tedious work.
I think that Duolingo should award us a day off for every 30 day streak and let the days off accumulate so we could take a week off now and again.
Oh gods... Yeah, I think I'd make the same choice if I lost my streak. It's nice to know that's an option now.
I don't like the ads on the new app though most,if not all,are free. Are you saying they are now charging real money and not just lingots to restore a streak? If so Duo is well on its way to being a fremium, and not a free service , just like basuu.
Yes. It is a feature in the app, I believe. If you lose a very long streak, you can pay real money, again, not fake, but real money, and have it restored. I would guess nobody except people with very long streaks would do this.
You could pay for the streak on the Android app? What version?
Is this new??
I thought to pay back one's streak is only available on the IOS platform?
Well I will have to make as much progress as I can before they become like the other freemium language services and basically price me out of the market on my fixed income.
I can make an occasional one off payment but can't afford any more recurring payment subscription services since I rely on my designated agent to transfer money from my SSDI linked account which forbids any bank cards to my personal checking account. $5 or $10 is a fairly big bite of my disposable income since the Home I live in takes all but $90/month from my Social Security ,from which amount one has to buy ones personal grooming and hygiene (TP) supplies since the latter are no longer covered by the new owners.
