What is the difference between: 1) kiu and kio 2) tiu and tio

I have recently read about the correlatives and I don't really understand the difference between: 1) kiu and kio. 2) tiu and tio. I would really appreciate it if someone would clearly explain them and also use many examples that are well explained.

The very basic rule is that you use "o" when the word is a stand-alone reference to something, and "u" in conjunction with another noun.

Example:

What are you doing: Kio vi faras? What problem are you doing? Kiun problemon vi faras?

Or

What are you eating: Kion vi mangxas? Which cake are you eating: Kiun kukon vi mangxas?

Or

This is beautiful! Tio belas. That dog is beautiful: Tiu hundo belas.

Sometimes, the "u" form can be used when the other noun can be assumed. In that case, it has the sense of "which one?" or "that one".

Example:

I love dogs, I'll take that one!: Mi sxatas hundojn, mi prenos tiun! Here are some cakes. Which one would you like?: Jen iuj kukoj. Kiun vi sxatus?

I will leave it to more fluent speakers to comment further.

In addition, u words can sometimes be understood to refer to a person when they are alone.

Kiun vi amas? Whom do you love? Mi amas tiun. I love that person.

Kiu manĝis la picon? Who ate the pizza? Tiu manĝis la picon. That person ate the pizza.

Eureka! I've read every thread on Duolingo and some on Lernu about tio/tiu and your answer is the first that makes sense :) I was about to throw in the towel and admit defeat to these 2 small words lol

Shut up and take my lingots!

thanks a lot. i understood the concept. it would be great if you give me more examples including all correlatives ending in -u and -o. i will really appreciate it. Are iu, neniu and cxiu used in the same way as kiu and tiu?

This question has been raised in a number of other posts. If you check out the "Related Discussions" feature of Duolingo or do some searches, I am sure you'll find them.

And yes, all correlatives work in principle the same way. I will leave it to more experienced speakers to provide examples.
