Suggestion: Showing someone's native language. (with Screenshots)

Hi, Dear Duolingo team. I am not sure if this has already been suggested before but I have recenly thought of an idea to show one's native language in pofile. (Sorry if it has already been suggested) :) I have been thinking about the way it could look like and I think that one of these three pictures could be added to the website to show that one's native language is German :) If you like the idea or the way it could look like, please upvote the discussion so that Duolingo team would notice it :)

Variants on this idea get suggested from time to time - often people say they would like to see someone's native language in their posts. For some reason I do not understand the idea is controversial, however I support it.

Thank you for your reply! :) It has been suggested that long ago, therefore I don't think it is going to be added :(

The problem is varieties. Let's say someones native language is Scots. You'd represent that with a scottish flag. How would you represent Scottish English or Scottish Gaelic? Or even worse, what if someones native language is of some african tribe that no one has heard of and that doesn't have a flag? It would be a huge pain.

However, the way I'd solve it is by allowing to pick a flag and write a little text next to it, like they do it on www.reddit.com/r/duolingo

I thought I did this with my picture :) I'm German so half of the picture is covered with it's flag. And I'm learning English and Spanish so these two are parted below of this.

OK, I heard some native British English speakers who actually don't accept US English as a language. So to avoid the hate of these people I chose the Union Jack as flag.

(You are welcome to steal this pic, by the way, I made it myself out of openclipart flags and the Union Jack was completely self constructed!).

I did the same in my avatar. I've been lonely ever since that one guy wrote about me in "Ein Bericht für eine Akademie".

I think it would be pushing it a little too far, as what you really want to show here is your learning progress of new stuff, not show off what you have already done, to motivate us to learn. Interesting idea tho :D

I disagree. I'm looking for friends to chat, I'd like to know in which languages I can communicate with them. And it's not show off, it can be motivating and challenging.

I'm sure it has, but pro temp, we could use it so people learning said native language could find people who've known the language they're whole lives and get help from them.
