Does 'dw i'n cymryd yr arholiad' not make sense in Welsh?

The idiom in Welsh is 'sefyll yr arholiad' which is the equivalent in English of 'sitting the exam' even though 'sefyll' = to stand.

In English 'taking the exam' is probably a synonym for 'sitting the exam' but in Welsh it is always 'sefyll yr arholiad'.
