Michif As A Language?

Michif is the traditional language of the Métis People, it is a mixed language (or Creole) made up of Cree, French, and sometimes Ojibwe.

In recent years, Michif has been going extinct; this is mostly due to the mistreatment of Aboriginal People in Canada. However, in recent years efforts have been made to preserve this language and to teach it to more people.

I myself only know bits and pieces of Michif and I know that bringing it to Duolingo would be hard but it would be worth it.

Does anyone speak Michif or want to learn it? If so we should get talking about creating a course.

Marci, Meegwetch, and Thank You.

I've never heard of Michif before. But surely, if you and others who know Michif are able to collaborate with each other properly and educate people on this language, it could be successful. Though, I think it would be a little hard to get people interested in learning a language that has been starting to go extinct if not many know how to speak it or aren't regularly taught. But my doubts are nothing to be of your concern. I know you'll be able to do it! :)

Hebrew and Yiddish have both been languages that have been considered extinct... and there has been work by various parties to have Cantonese become extinct as well.

Yiddish and Hebrew as still spoken today--thanks to writers in the 1600s and 1800s... and I've been one to say the best way to revive various First Nations languages is to start having contemporary works show up and appear. Which having lessons on them will do quite a bit to lower the bar of entry on adding various contemporary works.

So... my counter is to suggest people just write a lot of fan fiction in various First Nations tongues. Also translate fan fiction into these tongues... I imagine the Tara Gilesbie classic My Immortal would be an entertaining dramatic read if translated into various other languages.

Wait... there is a word for combining French, Cree and Ojibwe?

Well... now I am interested. As some of my friends in the past are/were Metis and I still meet and talk to some Metis people today... but I'm more likely talk with Coast Salish, Six Island Nations, Muskw--er cannot spell that one (sorry!!!)... more just due to the region I'm currently in.

Well, throwing my vote this way.

Hello! I've heard about Michif before and it seems very interesting. Actually, the first time I learnt about was through this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2FsElCXlHI

Normally I'd direct you to a guide, but Michif isn't listed on there, so I'll ask Lrtward to put it on the list for you. Good luck getting it on Duolingo!

And now it is listed in the guide. Thank you for letting me know about this discussion, DragonPolyglot!

Yes, please?!!! I have looked into different lessons online via youtube and such but it just isn't working well. Maybe if we could reach out to the Metis community there could be some mighty collaboration?!

Norman Fluery from Canada is Metís and teaches Michif and has videos on YouTube. He would be the person to get involved with as far as input for Duolingo. He may know people who speak it who would like to help as well.

Please add Michif. They have an app in the play store for Michif but it's difficult to use and the structure is awkward.
