I noticed in book I read, that this is how people ask where one stayed during a vacation or a trip. Something like Q:"ты был в Москве? Где ты жил?" A:"Да. Я жил в Метрополи". Is that correct, or is there a more specific situation to use it like this?

В "Метрополе"*

Yes, it's correct, but of course it's also a correct way to ask about any place of living, not only the one where people stay during trips.
