Any opinions? Is Esperanto more popular than people think? Duolingo is mentioned too.

It was more useful. There was a spike of new learners after that.

That's a great STARt. Consider(ing) comes from Latin 'sider' (star)→considerare=examine. When you examine the Star of the languages, you'll get the fastest tree to the Star status.

European Identity, (search for) Zlatko Tisljar Assoc4 EU Consciousness Maribor 3/8'11 www.debatingeurope.eu/2011/08/03/should-esperanto-be-the-language-of-europe/#.V53JpLh95hF http://www.debatingeurope.eu/2011/12/19/is-a-european-identity-possible/#.WIvTJfl97mE show equal respect to all, including the speakers of those 'minority languages'

  1. humans are social beings

  2. satisfy social desire in many societies/groups. Each group develops Social Identity

  3. main sign of 1’s IDentity is Language (role of communication and identity)

  4. Using somebodies IDentity is not good idea. Neutral Esperanto is mutual/respectful better way (it doesn't devalue the languages of interCultural communication).

I hope you understand why Esperanto is the most successful Auxiliary/Planned language.

If it was about useful, Latin/English would be better options. However the effort and cultural identity are big issues that makes them plateau at some stage.
Majority (50%) will NEVER want to learn somebody's language unless forced. Most should never want to ignore the cultural rich diversity that goes with their languages.

while i understand what you are saying it still is a european based language not truly without any ties to language areas as well! I think in a sense it is not truly neutral either.

The core/engine of a language is it's structure/grammar/semantics. EO grammar is not European.

The vocabulary is like the interior of a structure/car. You can recognise the EU words, but for active use you need to remember and use/think in the language.

Esperanto is easiest and NEUTRAL, ~10x more effective.

How popular do people think it is?

April 1, 2017

Esperanto need awareness more than anything else. Youtube langfocus'l youtube did its part successfully. We need more Fake news.

Edit: sorry for the quick reply which was based on the youtube link.

It's serious. This language changes the basis of communication and allows you to meet people from all cultures at the same level,” said Mostoller, who believes that “Esperanto today is about forming friendships.” Esperanto community blossoms as aspiring speakers connect online.

The younger generation is not very exposed (yet) to Esperanto, but is more focused on enjoying life/friendship, less materialistic (I think).

It's important to keep that focus, as with the critical mass/numbers via internet, EO will become the most convenient way to connect to diverse cultures. For some, the 'investment' will pay off.

I hope it's a bit more popular now. Just posted to Twitter, FB, Linkedin (>800)

I meant this as a serious question. I skimmed over the story and the gist I got was : young people dabbled in Esperanto and enjoyed themselves... and actually found people who speak Esperanto.

As someone who speaks Esperanto, this isn't news. I am curious what Isak meant by his initial comment.
