US Department of Defense language courses (free)

I came across this -which is, in essence, three US institutions learning systems (Peace Corps, Foreign Service Institute, and Defense Language Institute). Some methods may be outdated (I don't know) but contain lots of languages that are difficult to find, and all the materials are free, including downloadable audio tapes and books. I guess it may be a good complement to Duolingo.

Scroll down for all the languages, and a little more to separate courses from the three different institutions. Enjoy!

Oh my! You should just hear the first few seconds of the first audio. This is terrible. I like it!

LOL, so dramatic. Funny thing, I heard those Spanish dialogues, it seems so staged (I'm bilingual Spanish/English). I wonder if when I hear other languages' audios are the same but because I'm not a native I can't tell.

After a look on the russian courses, i am feeling like invading the USSR: everybody sounds so depressed. The vocabulary is mainly about "tanks", "colonels" and "missiles". Even the "hobby part" was: "Soviet military base is welcoming. Afghan soldiers enjoy visiting soviet soldiers and playing guitars together".

And I am fond of the north-african VS 'a british speaking french' accents of the sub-saharan french course. Should I specify that in the dialogs of this course, the african guy is a boy, a waiter or a housekeeper and the guy speaking with a british accent is the "patron"? ... and in one of the lessons, there is a "meeting with the chief of the village".

These courses are like a walk through history.

No need to invade Holland at these times. ;)

Farsi.... I'll keep this in mind. My plan is to learn Farsi after I'm done with German, which might be in a year or two....
