kärlek och politik is a great book to read once you know the basics. It’s relatively easy and flows nicely... here’s the bilingual version which is v helpful, and good for learning new words.

You can order lättläst (you could translate it as: easy to read).

I've read some parts of "Kejsarn av Portugallien" by Selma Lagerlöf in my language course. It's 'translated' in a more easy Swedish by someone else.

So, as an adult, you don't always want to read childbooks. Of course it's nice to start with. But lättläst books are adult books, translated for people who are having trouble with reading, or who are learning the language.

The chapters are very short, just the core. And the sentences are not so long.

I recently orderd "Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann / Lättläst" and it's not so hard to understand. Just take the time, read it twice, translate some words, and you will understand.

You can order lättläst books on: www.bokus.se Just search on 'lättläst' and you will find it :-D

For the first one, "Kejsaren av Portugallien", by famous author and Nobel prize winner Selma Lagerlöf, it was written so long ago that it's made available for free here: http://runeberg.org/portugal/ Remember though that it was written long ago, so the language isn't contemporary anymore.
