The Japanese course page is up!

https://www.duolingo.com/course/ja/en/Learn-Japanese-Online

"There are two truths about Japanese culture. First, it is celebrated the world over — film, food, literature, music, art, all of it. Second, to best appreciate it, you must first learn Japanese! With Duolingo, you’ll start speaking Japanese and reading its three writing systems (yes, even Kanji). Learn Japanese and confidently order tonkotsu at a 10-seat side-alley Tokyo ramen shop or cheerfully check-in to a Hokkaido onsen. Never read awkwardly translated manga or watch dubbed anime again. You may already be curious about the culture behind the world’s third largest economy, sushi, haikus, karate, Zen, and Pokemon. Once you start learning Japanese, you’ll realize that’s just the beginning."

The Torii Gate makes sense, but I have to admit I'm surprised the page is blue; I was expecting red. I think this is the first time a course page has used a color that isn't on the flag.

すごいですよ!

I'm surprised it's blue when there's no blue in the flag. I personally think white would have been super cool.

Yeah, I think red would have made more sense, it is the color of the sun in their flag, PLUS the Miyajima Torii monument is bright red.

It is surprising, but it's awesome. It's really well designed, and the concentric red and white circles look really good on the blue background.

Here's the full-color version that appears on https://www.duolingo.com/course/ja/en/Learn-Japanese-Online if you're not logged in to Duolingo:

All I see is white

I mean the background to the monument. It usually matches one of the colors of the flag.

I can see it now. Likely a glitch.

I don't think so, I think it's just the color they chose.

I am also very excited to see the page. And also rather confused as to why the page is blue. The world won't end. Just seemed kind of weird lol. I look forward to the Japanese course and hope to make it the first tree I complete on Duolingo がんばて!

Just curious, what does がんばて mean?

April 7, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Xefjord

I botched it. It should be 頑張って!

Oh, then what does that mean, though? I know only a little Japanese, I can read kana (i know you said 'ganbate' at least in the original, but I don't know what that means in English). I know only some of the more basic kanji and I don't know the two you used. I really want to do this course when it comes out btw.

Ganbatte! It means "Good Luck!" in a "You can do it!" kind of way

April 8, 2017

Literally translated, it's the imperative form of 頑張る (ganbaru), meaning "to do one's best," so you're telling someone to do their best, a lot like the idiom "break a leg" in English.

This brought a smile to my face. I cannot wait to take this course! I've had bad experiences trying to learn Japanese in the past, so I hope learning it through Duolingo will prove better! Thanks for posting this!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA finally!! I expected red too, but in my mind I associate Japanese with blue, and I associate Korean with green.
