I couldn't wait to share with all of you guys the fact that today I finish the German tree after 120 days .

I feel so proud of myself because German is so freaking hard and I had 0 prior knowledge of the language. This is my second tree (French was my first one) and it took a lot of determination and effort to get through it, as opposed to the French one.

Just in case you were wondering about my background, I'm a native speaker of Spanish, almost native in English and I'm somewhere in the middle in French. And let me tell you, German is so much harder than any of those languages.

After all this effort, you might wonder: do I speak German? Definitely not! I can barely read. That thing that tells you that you can read 99% of the articles is definitely not accurate in my case. I can read extremely simple texts. And there is no chance in hell that I can hold a conversation in German.

Nevertheless... I feel that German is no longer a mystery to me, I do not feel like its an alien language anymore. I know where it stands in comparison to the other languages I know and what I have to do to improve it. I have definitely learned a lot of German. I feel like duolingo is extremely successful in taking you to the next level when you already have some knowledge (like me with french since I took 3 college classes). In my case it did wonders, it's just that my starting point was ...nothing.

I am literally in love with duolingo haha so I'll keep learning German until I have mastered all the vocab in here. Thanks little green owl.

Hope I didn't bore y'all

-Cristian

Actually, I did too. If we could see each other's trees then there would be more reason to strengthen it. :)

Good job! That's really impressive, I want to complete my spanish tree, spanish is apparently a very easy language, and I'm very ashamed of failing it...

congrats on your accomplishment, but depressing to know that I may not be able to carry a conversation after finishing my tree

'' And there is no chance in hell That I can hold a conversation in German.'' Do you have to watch movies, and listen to the radio in German. now it is just a matter of familiarity with the language (I hope, because I want learn German) xD

I always watch German TV, and am just starting to read German magazines. I don't understand it very well at all, but full immersion is incredibly helpful for any language. At first I was discouraged, especially with reading (hardcore bookworrm!), but I realized that when I first started reading 30 years ago, I struggled just as much as I am now. Watching TV is much easier, as the visual helps you understand more of what is going on, and it gives you the chance to become more comfortable with the sounds of that language. And even if you sound ridiculous, speaking out loud what you are reading is great, it helps you learn the muscle memory for certain sounds. :D

Yes! All these things are really important! and speak loud when are reading is great and useful, I love do this in Italian (Italian language sounds very beautiful)

Cristian, das ist ja wunderbar! Perhaps it will encourage us, um, slower tree climbers to hurry up and finish a little faster. :-)
