A Gathering Place Previously an alert to the removal of Activity.
As most Duolingo users are aware, Luis and co. have totally removed all methods of chat outside of Discussions, and also are deleting new discussions that aren't specifically and totally language related. However, they're not getting rid of old posts that get edited, as far as I can tell. So I'm changing this post to a place where members of the Tiger Clan, Friends of the Tigers, and friends of friends can just chat, check on other people if they've commented here, make sure one another is still alive and active. Hopefully this won't get deleted. If it does, I'll find some other way to talk to you all. I miss the wonderful users of Duolingo so very much. - Lady Juliette LaMagie of Tigerclan, Heir to the Throne of the Domain of Loki and all Powers, Titles, and Lands implied with the Throne, Loyal Servant of Queen Tigress, and Protector of All Tigers and Friends of Tigerclan and the Tigers within.
A/B tests can run for various amounts of times. Sometimes, people get added to one, and then to another and another, all testing how various things interact one or more at a time.
It would make sense for them to test accounts under different situations. So, new users, new but not brand new users, and so on. Different variables apply to each.
There have, on the other hand, also accounts that had lost their Activity streams that are starting to get them back. So, hopefully there is a light at the end of this tunnel after all. Being prepared is a good idea regardless. However, don't forget that being safe is the most important consideration: Internet Safety practices.
Except that's the thing. All new accounts being created have no activity or streams. Several of my friends have tested it. I hadn't heard anything about activity being returned to anyone, can you give me a specific example? I would love it if this was all a big mistake and was just a widespread, long-running test after all.
I didn't record the names of accounts I was referring to because I didn't realize I'd be referencing this in the future, but here is record of the mention from April 6th in my team chat. (Correction, April 6th, not 17th. I was thinking 2017 in my head when I was typing.)
I agree, if Duo actually is eliminating the opportunity for us to communicate with each other, then I'm out of here. It will have become just another one-way language study course, the only benefits being that it is a no-charge, and no ads site.
While you are working on your OP, curious bunny is waiting curiously to find out what the code is/does o.o
Hm... that's extremely odd. Thanks for pointing that out, Juliette. At least if I happen to lose my discussion abilities, I'll know what happened.
I think if the Duo code is banning new users from commenting on things, then it might have something to do with the new user spam problem that has been taking place for a while. There were recently situations where a number of accounts were being used for the purposes of posting spam messages and violating the guidelines. When those accounts were checked, it was found that they were created within minutes to days of the situation. If it's an A/B test, Duo probably wanted to make sure that those new users weren't intending on posting spam. But I could be wrong.
Why post something while it's still in progress and tell us to not read it yet?
You could edit a rough draft in a text file on your computer or the Notes program on your phone or wherever, and then copy and paste it into the text field of the make-a-comment page here, instead of editing the whole thing from scratch in the text field of the make-a-comment page here.
One additional comment, my stream disappeared, but then reappeared. I personally would be surprised if Duo is planning to eliminate this feature.
The same has happened to me!!!! Activity gone!!
But I have plenty of friends, so it makes no sense.
I found my activity stream under my profile. Click on your avatar, then on "your profile" and it should be there.
Hello peeps. I'm just here to remind you all that you should never give up hope easily. :)
FYI - I received this message yesterday. EDIT: names removed, but the information comes from someone who is in a position to know.
"Yesterday moderators and course contributors received a notification from Duo, that soon the Activity stream will be taken away from all users ('in connection with optimisation and restructuring of the forum, which for users will appear the same as before, but now disconnected from Activity'). An official announcement for all users is expected in the forum this week."
Juliette! I apologize for contacting you on a two month old post, but I wanted to tell you that if you need some sort of way to contact your friends I might be able to help. I saw that not long ago you set up a post for that specific purpose. I also saw that it was unfortunately deleted. :( But, if you use an old post then you could make that into your own contact site. You could send the link to your friends by contacting them on some post that they commented on by simply replying to their comment. ( I hope this is making sense??!) If you are having a hard time contacting someone, or if you don't have a followed post where you can share the link with them, just look their name up into the discussion search. For example, I did not have this discussion followed so I searched Lady Juliette LaMagie and this page popped up. This is the way that has personally worked with me, and I hope I will work for you as well.
I appreciate you trying to help, but most of my friends don't comment on discussions much. It's fine that you're talking to me on this, I know that there really aren't other ways to do that. Anyway, thank you, but there's not a whole lot I can do.
It's good to see that you are still here. I miss the connections and translation community we had. It's strange how old friends seem to pop up at times, and it is also reassuring.
I quite agree. Last week one of my best friends contacted me on an old post that one of my other friends made that I had made one short comment on XD
Why do you guys not use Discord? It is one of the easiest most user friendly chat platform available that still allows a person to stay completely anonymous. You can start by joining the Official Unofficial Duolingo Discord https://discord.gg/tvkKxQu Then you can create your own private server or friend each other and chat in groups.
Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to contact other people about this post and the only other platform I know my Duo family from is Memrise. However, it's like Duolingo in the sense that you can't message people. I feel very distant from them, even though I know they are active by looking at their XP increase.
(By the way, sorry if I was interrupting a conversation, as you may not know me or anything... XD)
I can't even use Memrise. I use literally less than a dozen sites, and out of those there's only three with any chat system. This one, though I can barely call this a chat system, a general learning site, and an education based entertainment site about animals.
I also can not believe that Duolingo hasn't given us some way of contact back. Communication was a very important part of this site. Without it everything seems so quite.
True... I don't even like conversing with people I don't know online, but Duolingo was the exception because of its embracing, communal atmosphere. Plus, many of the people I got to know really helped me in learning French (cough CharmingTiger cough Why3), along with discussing cultures involved in the languages we were learning. Now, I can't do much of the things I did before. I don't even know how to contact moderators without a stream. The discussions page?
But, I believe a new system is going to replace the activity, based on what I have heard. So, I suppose there's hope!
This was also my experience - the ONLY place where I engaged chatting, and for the same reasons you gave. My son works in IT and I understand a little of what is involved in recreating a platform and program. I am just waiting to see what is coming, because I believe something is. (But, then, I was wrong about them not taking away the activity streams. :-) )
Evidently you haven't seen Luis's track record. He said ages ago that Immersion would have a cool new replacement eventually. It's been months, he took away all streams and regular commenting, and all we have is the ridiculous Labs thing.
What do you mean by restricted computer? Besides Discord is available for any platform they also have a mobile app.
I mean my family limits the sites I'm allowed to use. Same with the mobile platforms I have.
I have not had streams and activity for quite a long time, and was unaware that ANYONE still had them.
Nobody does anymore, but some users did up until about three weeks ago. Now they're all gone.
Hey, are you here or in Russia? How did/does your Russian hold up under daily use?
oh far from it! My Russian is a lot of guesswork!! I have started to recognize words that sound alike – 'office' and 'water' which sort of do – but then I keep forgetting words like horse and dog and book and beer (important words to me...). And there's some words like "gde" that mean 'where' which is a good one... but I'll be speaking mostly English and acting out charades!
oh no! that would be terrible! I really hope that doesn't happen, what you say is true :/
