Yeah, onomatopoeia explains why in Russian (and other Slavic languages) it's гром/grom, in Indonesian/Malay it's guruh, in Hindi/Urdu it's gaṛagṛāhaṭ (in Russian гро́хот/gróhot means a very loud stunning sound including thunders), in Telugu it's urumu.
