Pledge to end the downvoting

I Insert your creative username here pledge to abstain from downvoting legitimate responses in the discussion forum.

I pledge to abstain from downvoting responses that I merely disagree with.
I pledge to abstain from downvoting responses that I do not like.
I pledge to abstain from downvoting people that I do not like.

I pledge to reserve my downvotes for only the most heinous of crimes, the most heinous of trolls, not for fellow members that are simply speaking up.

I pledge to do my bit toward creating a positive Duolingo community, to be open and welcoming towards other members.

Until someone gives me a good reason to part from my pledge. I Usagiboy7--the blue bunny, do pledge not to use my down votes casually.

I pledge to do my bit toward creating a safe and respectful learning environment as outlined in the guidelines, and to be open and welcoming towards other members of our Duolingo community.

I'm already on record elsewhere in this discussion forum as saying the only person I've ever downvoted is the site's founder and mastermind, St. Luis Himself, for being tone-deaf whilst defending the removal of the Vocab section.

So I'll just add here what I said there, that I'll only ever downvote for a crime as damaging to DL as yanking the Vocab section. I think that covers all five (six?) of alsocass' criteria. :-)

Ha... I love that someone downvoted this... no seriously, I don't. Honestly, this community feels like a more intellectual version of WoW trade chat. :(

The down votes are used to communicate many things, like "hey, I think you posted this to the wrong forums" or "eep! you've violated the guidelines". Only one function is to say "Your opinion is not important to me." I think a lot of people come to Duolingo from hostile environments and bring a hostile reading to communication on here. (And sometimes bring their hostility here as well.) But, I would hope that people will learn the rich nuances of each feature. I can easily say I won't casually use the down vote button because I have a lot of time. And communication is part of my duties here as a moderator. But, some people are pressed for time. They want to get someone's attention so they essentially wave their arms in the air via down vote before moving on. So, don't despair! It's not as bleak and hopeless as you might think. A large portion is just a misunderstanding. Not all, but some. :)

True, but many people tend to be upset ("insulted") by downvotes. Be honest: who likes a downvote? I don't support the OP's pledge to get rid of it, though. I think it's a useful tool (like, well, the upvotes, but that goes hand-in-hand, I suppose ;)).

Sometimes, comments/posts are read out of context and a cold shower of downvotes pours down.

I am merely asking that people think about why they are downvoting. Is it really needed. Just let the idea stand, it is okay to disagree without needing to shout it down... which is figuratively what a downvote does. Enough downvotes hides a conversation. It only takes something like 3 downvotes to hide a comment... to shout it down.

Fair enough when it is a troll or likewise, but why should this be done to legitimate comments?

You are right, voting in any direction requires some kind of thinking. This also goes for upvotes: blindly upvoting because you just liked the subject line or the first sentence of the post (or generally just skimmed) is pretty much the same (although positively perceived).

And, yes: "a useful tool, but not in the hands of tools". Good one!
