So long, and thanks for all the lingots!

Ti ringrazio molto, Duolingo.

After four years, I have reached a level of note for my Duolingo streak.

(1,461 days includes the leap year; my streak “anniversary” is/ was April 8th.)

Sometimes 30 XP, sometimes 50 or more, and when we were on vacation at least 10 XP, but I never missed a day. I did a bit of translation (immersion) but I always did reviews of the lessons in order to reach 50,390 XP in Italian (level 25+) and 21,200 in English (level 22).

Over two years ago, I finished the Italian tree and so I decided to do the “English for speakers of Italian” tree. It was very useful— I recommend it!

Today, however, I am stopping my daily progress. Because of my “streak freeze” there will be one more day that it will be shown, but then it will return to zero. The reason? I don’t want to continue to do this every day. I need a break.

Do not feel bad for me! I am happy. And I will still have 10,715 lingots and nothing to spend them on.

Thank you very much, Duolingo.

Mabby,

You have been an inspiration to me, and I suspect all of us.

Thank you for all of the countless contributions, the gentle nudges and for all of the insightful comments that you have given over the years

We both know that knowledge is not the measure of a streak, so your knowledge of Italian will be something that you will retain for a lifetime!

I look forward to your return!

Jim

Complimenti, Mabby! - ciao.

Well done, I always stop activity on Duo in vacation time, maybe I should try holding the strike for ones, but I think it is going to be difficult, since there is no access at the place I'll stay on vacation. Good luck!

It helps (?) that I don't get vacations...
Last real one was when I had an employee to cover for me, in October 2012.
I do my lessons at work. On a few long weekend trips I've had wi-fi acccess, but I don't like the mobile phone app (or using my phone for anything, really), so I turned down my coaching levels to 10XP per day so I didn't have to spend much time on wi-fi on my phone.

My streak was broken last year during a lon flight overseas. It was then that I found the "streak freeze" feature. But not used it yet.

If you can set aside a small amount of time at the same time every day.
I normally did lessons starting at 3pm at "work", before going home.
On weekends, first thing in the morning when I got up.
It gets to be a habit.

Many congratulations Mabby - what an achievement. And thank you for your many helpful posts along the way. Do you feel that you are still learning here on Duolingo or mainly just revising and keeping what you know fixed in your brain? What do you plan to do next? I ask these questions as I have been thinking about moving onto something else. It's just hard to break the habit of my daily Duo visits! Best wishes to you.

Yes, I will be back on Duolingo to keep my knowledge fixed in my brain, as you say. I've also been doing the free Wellesley College EdX Italian programs-- done two and part way through the third one.
I learned new things and got a different way to look at some grammar during those, so they are worthwhile, in my opinion.

I still can't follow a basic video conversation between those girls there, though. :-(

My vocabulary is quite decent after all of these years, and I can read 70% of what I see in Italian. I (still) struggle to quickly put English thoughts into Italian words but Duolingo has given me the confidence to speak out loud and not worry about mistakes-- assuming that I ever get back to Italy to try things out.
