The Usagi Project
Welcome to this project in honor of our amazing mod!
Hi, everybody!! Usagiboy7 is a great moderator and member of our learning community, and we all know it! He is friendly and polite to new users who have recently started learning here, can work in collaboration and can be reasonable. He is very helpful in the forums too, and helps to clean them and helps with so many other things! Another user had a project in honor of them, and I was thinking we could do the same for Usagiboy7, who again, is a great member/moderator of the Duolingo Community!
It is simple: Learn one skill each day, for a week.
Learning is what we are here for. We are also here for helping others out in the sentence forums. The threads we have are great, and I am glad to be hear on Duolingo! It really is a GREAT place to be (this is the best community I have ever come across in my life). Please participate in honor of our great friend, who works very hard.
Usagiboy7, we appreciate what you have done for us.
Aww, this is so sweet! I love that this is all folded into a way to encourage people to make progress with their language studies.
I feel so fortunate to have found Duolingo. This community is very special to me. The connections we make here are changing lives (others' as well as our own, certainly they have changed mine). We are making close friendships regardless of geopolitical boundaries, learning about each other's languages and the cultures fostering and fostered by those languages. Together, thanks to the combined forces of the courses, these forums, and our Activity streams, we've not just been learning words, but how those words are woven into and impacting our daily lives. Our language journeys have made us curious about each other's lives, we've become more than just screen names or foreign stereotypes. We're more human together, and hopefully better humans to one another at that. I hope we can keep that with us, keep our curiosity growing and not let fear shut us down or make us pull back from feeling the truth of each other's humanity, to want good things for each other.
So, come high water and a/b tests, being caught between a rock and some German trees..., through many phases of the website that have barked up the wrong tree--but that have ultimately inspired 10 more trees (several of which we found we liked rather a lot), here is to the future of Duolingo!
Most importantly, however, here is to the future of the Duolingo community, the friendships we've built here, and the ways in which those friendships are--and hopefully will continue--changing the world.
With great warmth and affection, thank you. It was so heartwarming to come home and find this discussion. :')
I feel like I'm missing something (or I'm incredibly stupid). What do you mean by "they"?
You know how girls pronouns are she and her and boys have him and he? Usagi is a genderqueer and prefers they pronouns :)
Oh, so I was being stupid... facepalms
Just... Just ignore me. Sorry. ^ ^"
Don't worry, you were brave to ask! I don't know if I would, haha :P I was mistaken too :D
Being agender doesn't mean not seeing gender or not playing with it or preferring to look this or that way. For me, it is simply lack of an innate feeling of being any gender. So, sometimes I play with gender as an idea. (Which is what happened when I ended up with this username.)
One day, I was looking at some cool fan art of anthropomorphic bunny guys. (Actually, I'm not sure if it was fan art or original. Anyhow, the art was amazing!) So, when I joined a social chat just after that, I picked Usagiboy. I went with the Japanese word for bunny (Usagi) instead of the English word because it was an anime discussion site. But, also because I'd learned the Japanese word for "bunny" a long time ago from looking up the meaning of Tsukino Usagi's name. (Tsukino Usagi is from an anime called Sailor Moon.) I have a soft spot for that anime and the manga (comic book) version of Usagi's character.
For those interested, Tsukino Usagi in full means, "Bunny of the Moon." All of the show's characters have cool names that reflect their characters like that: Hino Rei (Spirit of Fire), Mizuno Ami (Friend of Water), Aino Minako (Beautiful Child of Love), Kino Makoto (Sincerity of Wood), Tenou Haruka (Distant Sky Ruler), Kaiou Michiru (Mature Sea Ruler), Setsuna Meiou (Moment Dark Ruler), Tomoe Hotaru (Earth Sprouting Firefly), Chibi Usagi (Little Bunny), Chiba Mamoru (Defender of Earth) Translation Source.
Anyhow, I didn't realize at the time that the username would end up being attached to me long term.
Shortly after, I joined Duolingo. I needed to think of a username for here too, so I just went with the same one and added a 7. Then I became a mod and it's best if our usernames are consistent. So, here I am with a homage to Tsukino Usagi and someone's amazing art at the start of my name, and "boy" for the end of my name.
Usagi means bunny in Japanese :) Basically, our favourite moderator is a bunny :P
Skills for the bunny, yes! I would be happy to help. Thank you Usagi for all that you do for us!!! : )
One skill each day, for a week? O.o
Can it be a Memrise skill? Since I am shamefully cheating on Duolingo with Memrise runs and hides in a bush
Tuesday: Adverbs 4, Politics 1, V. Cond. 2, Abs. Ob. 3, Fantasy, Present 4, Philosophy, Cl. Music
Wednesday: Rel. Pron, Abs. Ob. 4, Politics 2, Culture, The world (finished tree)
I will try. One skill a day for a week to say "Thank You" to Usagiboy7 for all they do to make Duolingo (and the world) a better place to be; for their honesty and courage!
Count me in! My week for the Penny Project still hasn't legitimately started because I've been very busy, but Bunny is amazing and certainly deserves this tribute! =D
I'll totally take part, not in a language I'm seriously learning right now though, maybe Italian.(I don't think Bunny's gonna want me to go faster than my optimum pace!)
When does it begin? Is it, like, self-moderated? :D
Wednesday, 2017/04/12: Irish: Imperative
(Edited to add a sentence in parentheses)
It looks like it might be a self-directed challenge. In other challenges like that, folks have created a daily chart, and then edited the comment to update their chart. For example:
Monday: Verbs 1: Complete
Tuesday: Verbs 2: Complete
Wednesday: Verbs 3: In Progress
You could do that here if you wanted :)
Let's do this. Already 1 skill yesterday, 2 skills today. Edit: Monday: 1 skill Tuesday: 2 skills Wednesday: 1 skill Thursday: 1 skill Friday: 1 skill
I agree with the poster. Usagiboy7 is a kind moderator, but also a hard working person. I applaud their effort.
