I noticed I can't see my friends trees anymore :( I really liked it as it was a good measure for what they had learned so far and a great way to compete based on tree progress... The website is still awesome tho! :D

Yes, I also enjoyed to try to compete with my friends on tree progress. Maybe though some people offended/upset/discouraged others by their progress or learning decision progress, and asked for their tree to be private. Which is a fair enough request. I like to see everyone achieve their own success. However, it would be fun - for the brave of us - to allow our trees to be seen. But we need to have greater respect for those that were finding themselves choosing to not engage - if others could see their progress, etc. My private ambition is to get through the ladder once, and then to go back through it many times - until I have made my knowledge sound. We can still compete on points, however that is not an indication of our progress.
The other argument on progress is it is not how quickly you progress through the ladder, but HOW WELL and soundly you progress. It is possible to progress through the ladder, and at the end - still not be sound in your knowledge. And I have seen some peoples derogative comments on others - who went through the ladder - but did not have a working ability in the language. I think it is sad that these people have made these comment - it shows a disrespect and shallowness in their expectations of others, and also of duolingo. I don't consider duolingo as a competency evaluation certification service, but as an tool, a resource, to encourage people to engage in and learn other languages. And to have fun while doing so, and create a community that improves the outcomes for the world - but improving communications and creating community and connections. So, I hope one day in the future, we can get to choose if we want to allow our trees to be seen by the community - as I long again to race through the ladder against my peers. ;) And I agree with you - the site is AWESOME !
