How can you make it? It's like a sneak peek.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Step 1- Go to the home where you would do your lessons.

Step 2- Go to the flag icon next to your name and bring down the drop down menu.

Step 3- Right click any language and press inspect element.

Step 4- You will see multiple lines with "language choice etc." in them

Step 5- Choose one and replace the two letters near the end with "ja"

Step 6- Collapse that specific line even further and replace every two letters of the original language with "ja"

Step 7- There will be a line with the full spelt out name of the original language. Replace that with "Japanese"

Step 8- Go back to the drop down menu and select Japanese.

Just wanted to know - is this in accordance with Duo rules? I'd really like to try this out but I don't really want to do anything against thrm as I value my Duo account :/

April 17, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

It's fine don't worry. If it was angainst the rules im pretty sure this thread would no longer exist and it would have been patched.

April 17, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

If it was angainst the rules im pretty sure

this thread would no longer exist

if it had been posted already for some weeks, it could mean that.
But after only two days, it could just be that Duo staff didn't yet decided if it's ok or not (Duo staff just get aware of this thread, afaik).

and it would have been patched.

for this it's even less an indication that it's "not against the rules". Duolingo often take weeks or months (or years) to patch some issues. Some aren't yet patched after several years.

Guidelines are quite clear:

If you are [...] sharing information and instructions about using Duolingo in a way that may impact the system, community, learning, data or experience in a negative or significant manner, your account and posts may be removed.

And what Duo means by "impact community, [...] data or experience in a negative manner" is... up to Duolingo staff to decide.

April 17, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

How is this a negative manner?

@WaterPolyglot, as I said, it's up to Duo staff to decide what this means.
They may decide they don't care but if they don't decide that and instead estimate (whatever their reason could be) that it impact negatively, by sharing the instruction about how to trick the page's HTML in order to gain access to a course to which Duo doesn't mean we have access (yet), one takes the risk to see their account and posts removed, as announced by the Guidelines.

When one finds a bug, the best thing to do is to:

  1. Contact staff (or a moderator) to share in details the bug.
  2. Before sharing it publicly, to ask staff (or a moderator, who will ask staff) if it's ok to share the instructions about how to use that bug
  3. WAIT FOR AN ANSWER before sharing it.

Doing that, you're sure you'll not break any rules/guidelines.
On the other hand by directly sharing publicly the instruction about a trick to access something to which Duo clearly didn't mean to give access to(*) is taking the risk to break a rule/guidelines.

(*)If they meant for use to have access to this unfinished course, they'd have put the list in the list of accessible courses, one wouldn't have to trick the page's HTML in order to access the course.

April 18, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/MaxJiang3

@WaterPolyglot Hopefully they won't see this as worthy of being banned or anything, but we're accessing a course that has not yet released by messing with the source code, which isn't the most positive of things.

April 17, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/WaterPolyglot

How is this a negative manner? By their terms, significant manner will not include this.

April 17, 2017

So, I guess I best leave it alone as it's only about a month away anyway. Thank you!

Well, the editing only applies to our own accounts.

May 5, 2017

Duolingo doesn't care about this. Don't worry.

May 5, 2017

Two questions:

  1. Does it still work? Whenever I try it, it just sends me to a 'home page':

http://imgur.com/vTTwxvc

  1. Do you have any information about how long the course is?

Thanks.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Well i have been dropped to home page a FEW times. But now i permamently get dropped to it so idk it got glitched for me after level 5. And i guess the course is the length you see in the pics, but i heard they are planning to add new kanji and stuff after the course get's released.

Thank you very much for posting this!

It seems like the second lesson of Time 1 is as far as one can go... both the third lesson and the test out don't work

April 17, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

They mightn't have gotten that far in terms of developing the course... but it does say that it's more than halfway done...

Remark:
The (notoriously) most-of-the-time-totally-wrong automatic computation of progress presented on the courses' incubator pages indeed says 60.2%.
However the last report on progress made by the team working on the course says 15%. It's a quite old update but it's the last correct number about progress shared.

April 17, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Yes, that is correct. It's impossible to go past time 1. I wonder why tho.

April 15, 2017

Does Firefox not let you "Edit as HTML" the individual item? You may have to right-click on the right-pointing triangle at the beginning of that line.

April 17, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/ISpeakAlien

Thanks! Just asking, does it delete the course that was edited? Also, do I have to do this every time?

May 4, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

No, it doesn't delete it. And no, it stays how long you want it to stay.

May 4, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/ISpeakAlien

I discovered that after trying it! Thanks for the information! Just wondering, can this be done with other courses as long as you know the 2-letter name?

May 4, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Not, it is only available on Japanese course.

May 4, 2017

Have you tested other courses? I probably should.

May 4, 2017

One - two , One - two , One - two ,... If you know what i mean ;)

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/elvper

That's just the basic Japanse greeting. The first person keeps saying "one" and the other person keeps saying "two". This is done till one of them can't take it any longer, that person loses. Totally a true story /s.

You know what I didn't like about it? It's only three words per item, sometimes even two...

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

I noticed that, other lessons have more words depending where you are. Well the course isn't finished yet so don't expect much. I hope they will add more. My course glitched out at time so yeah lol.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Lea.1717

Thanks! I see a lot of vocabulary but not any grammar (except for Basics) yet... I hope they add it before the course is released.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

I noticed it that the skills are very lacking. But hey the course isn't even released yet. There is no way that such language as Japanese can have so very little skills. I guess they will add more in the future.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Liebert_

Hi! Does it work for Czech course? I'm not getting it.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/PkmnRanjya

I believe since the Japanese contributors are having other people test their course it only works for Japanese. I tried Korean and it doesn't work.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/MaxJiang3

I believe that Korean also has alpha testers though. I've tried all the other courses and none of them work. Apparently there was a glitch with the Japanese course a few days ago, so now people can access it.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Liebert_

what a pity! thanks for the answer. :)

April 15, 2017

I've tried all the other languages, and they all take me to the homepage. The Czech course will come out pretty soon though.

April 17, 2017

I hope we don't get in trouble for doing this ._. Been up ten hours without being removed so... It must be okay.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Lol, well my course got glitched after time 1 level 5 so rip.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/HexManiacSarina

Glitched for me, too. But it's still nice getting to at least see what's in there so far. To be honest, my eyes hurt from the lack of Kanji, but I know that'll be fixed later.

April 15, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

They said there will be 80 kanji in total and the course will teach you N5 Level. I heard they are planning on adding more later.

April 16, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/HexManiacSarina

I also heard the last part. I didn't know the first part though. That sucks, I'm closer to N3 or N2, but at least now I know not to spend a lot of time with the course.

April 16, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Well it's supposed to be for beginners so yeah i dont think it will help you when youre so far.

April 16, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/joedoolz47

I don't see why you would, it's not as if you're doing anything other than testing the course and being able to provide feedback.

April 17, 2017

Yes! Here is a new way to access the Japanese course on the web. All credits to the author.

May 21, 2017

That's very helpful to people who can't access Japanese yet!

May 21, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Logo121

Yep, it's working nicely. edit: I've been marked wrong for this for more than 4 times now. Is there even a standard for what to be converted to Kanji or not?

April 18, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

It's alpha there will be a lot of things like this.

On the other hand, what skill is this? My course permamently glitched on time. Unless im missing something here.

April 18, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/FilipFilip17

Are you still stuck on Time 1? I’m just asking because I’m scared to even go there, but it seems that MaxJiang3 from this thread and others somehow got further.

April 18, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Yes, if im not mistaking everyone here got stuck on time. Correct me if im wrong. Wait, he really completed time 3 wtf, is there like another trick that i dont know?

April 18, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Pok

No; you can get straight to the course now!

April 18, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Ummm, it's still hatching unlesss im missing something. Or are you talking about alpha testing?

April 19, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Logo121

I'm doing the placement test, since I have a certain proficiency in Japanese (Not enough to write in it so I can't apply as a contributor)

Throughout the tests (I restarted when I get one solution wrong every time) I found a lot of weirdness (Sometimes it's hard to guess the implied possession, subject etc and generally what to omit or not) and inconsistencies ("It's N o'clock" and "It's not N o'clock" doesn't use the same structure, the latter requires a "now"), but I agree, that's to be expected when we're just sneaking in an exercise that's not even ready to be out of alpha.

About the Kanji thing, they actually support Kanji quite well, I'm not sure if it's taught since I didn't start from the basics (nor would I want to do 4 whole skills of Hiragana), although sometimes it will not recognize the Kanji, like the screenshot taken above.

Also, no Romaji support. :/

April 19, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Logo121

Here's what I mean by implied subject: Google Translate says?: Technically these 2 translations are both correct (disregard the "a juice" thing) and whether the subject is I or You depends on context. Unless I misunderstood, that is.

April 19, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

Yeah, im aware of some weird mistakes let's take It's 6:00 o' clock but it requires me to write (今)は六時です however the english text doesn't say that it's NOW 6:00 o 'clock. So yeah there are some annoying mistakes. Although i hope alpha testers will be able to solve this with reports.

I will also have to agree with hiragana i think it would be better if people would learn hiragana and katakana on memrise or somewhere else then we would have like 4 kanji skills or something else instead of hiragana ones.

Well, not that i'm complaining. 日本語万歳!

April 19, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/jrikhal

Note: In Duo's process, the beta release is the phase where this type of "missing possible answer" is supposed to be corrected. And it's done with all learners reporting the missing answers then contributors reading reports and deciding if it's indeed missing (or if they didn't add it to the list of accepted answers on purpose).

April 19, 2017

Thank you very much, it's wonderful! I figured it out, how to do, the Japanese course I only do in Chrome, and the others here in Firefox.

You can do the Japanese course on Firefox if you can use it on other courses...

Can anyone get past Introduction Lesson 4? Whenever I try to do that lesson it kicks me out.

April 23, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/FilipFilip17

I was lucky not to have that problem. People seem to get stuck or kicked out at various points. Try to test out. If that doesn't work, select another language and then skip that lesson. Go here: https://www.duolingo.com/skill/ja/Introduction/5

And later try to test out. If it doesn't work, just keep going:

April 25, 2017

But it has problems: when I use Japanese, after that it takes me to welcome page where new beginners sing up and when I click to take a placement test for my French it sends me back :)

April 25, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Sofia_Williams

Please, what would happen if the course released? The course is changing and being testing, does these conditions ruin our account??!!

April 25, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Horako224

I'm pretty sure the course would just reset to 0 that's it. And if it takes you back to the page dont't go to it like you usually do use links like these: https://www.duolingo.com/skill/ja/Hiragana-1

https://www.duolingo.com/skill/ja/Whatever skill you want write here.

April 25, 2017

No, only Japanese.

May 2, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/SavLingo

Thank you for sharing. I changed the coding in Chrome and I was able to complete the placement test. However, it told me I wasn't able to test out (which can't possibly be true) and then redirected me to the homepage saying that En-Ja is not supported on desktop yet. Oh well, we shouldn't have to wait long for the release. I still gave you a Lingot. :)

June 4, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/testmoogle

The placement test is the only part of the course that doesn't work when using that trick to access the course on the web browser. If you just start from the first lesson and ignore the placement test, then it works fine.

I think you can also still use the shortcut tests, and within the skills use test out, if you need to skip past the easier stuff. I'm not sure though?

I've cleared the tree and reached lv13 without doing the placement test. All by doing the course on the web browser like that. I'm just using Strengthen Skills and Timed Practice mostly now. ^^

You might be waiting rather a long time for it to release on desktop. I haven't heard any more detailed ETA's other than Luis said:

"Japanese should be available on Web at some point this year, but I don't have an exact timeframe yet."
