Slán Go Fóill
Completing the Tree was the first target, and then I decided to push hard to reach level 25 on St Patrick's Day last year, and then there was the new audio in April, and it looked like Tree 2.0 would turn up shortly after that.
But here we are a year later, with no apparent progress on Tree 2.0 since Alex dropped out, and as I reach the milestone of a 2 year streak this Easter weekend, I think it's time to step back from Duolingo, and devote more of my time to other avenues of study.
I'm extremely grateful to Duolingo for the opportunity it has given me to both restore much of the Irish I had forgotten since my schooldays, and also to expand on it, and to provide a good foundation for further learning, and I'm grateful for all of the questions and answers from users in the Sentence discussions. I have learned as much from thinking about the best way to answer other learners questions as I have from reading other peoples answers, so even people at the very beginning of their journey with Irish have been valuable teachers!
I will check in from time to time to see if Tree 2.0 ever does turn up, but I'm going to let this streak expire tomorrow.
Congratulations and good luck!
You will be missed. I really mean it. You helped me and most likely many others a lot.
Best wishes to you, Knocksedan! I have found your many comments in the discussions very helpful, and am sorry to see you go. The Irish lessons were a struggle for me in the beginning, but I'm glad I stuck with it. As I get close to the end of the tree, I'm enjoying Irish more and more. Go raibh maith agat!
I have to warn you that finishing the tree is only an early milestone in what can be a very long journey (if you want it to be :-) )
Your comments and insights helped me a lot and I am sorry you are leaving. You also stand out, you speak your mind which makes your comments interesting and made you one of Duolingo's most interesting people. All the best Knocksedan.
"One of Duolingo's most interesting people".
Nílim cinnte go bhfuil mé ar iarraidh é seo mar feartlaoi!
I'm not sure that I want that to be my epitaph! :-)
Oh Dear God, this news is like a death in the family. I will miss your help, your comments and your thoughts. I so looked forward to the Tayto Man and his always so helpful contributions. Knocksedan I wish you pleasures galore as you explore your new avenues. May good-fortune and good health accompany you on all your endeavours. Slán go fóill agus go raibh maith agat.
Ah now, Oliver! Steady on! :-)
Táim ag breathnú ar níos mó TG4 agus ag éisteacht le níos mó RnaG!
Slán go fóill a chara. Is mór an trua go bhfuil tú ag imeacht uainn nó tá cainteoirí maithe Gaeilge de dhíth ag Duolingo i gcónaí go mór mór iad súid atá sásta cuidiú le foghlaimeoirí gan úsáid a bhaint as téarmaíocht chasta dhoiléir le clisteacht s' acu féin a chur chun tosaigh in ionad leas an fhoghlamora a chur chun tosaigh. Shíl mé gur dhuine iontach tuiceanach baúil thú go háirithe le foghlaimeoirí úra mar is rud mór dúshlánach é teanga nua a fhoghlaim! Ach sin an saol seal anuas seal aníos. Ní bheadh a fhios agat b'fhéidir go mbeadh Tree 2.0 ann as seo amach. Beidh le feiceáil!
Wow - is an-teistiméireacht é sin!
Níor thuig mé go hiomlán é ar dtús - níl mo chuid Ghaeilge sách maith go fóill, agus bhí orm frásaí ar leith a chuardach. Obair an-tairbheach a bhí ann!
Tá súil agam go bhfuil an ceart agat faoi Tree 2.0!
Ba mhaith liom buíochas a thabhairt do gach duine as na rudaí deasa a dúirt sibh.
Thank you to everyone for your kind words. I want to point out that it's just a coincidence that Duolingo removed the "activity stream" feature just a day after I let my streak expire. Nothing to do with me! They haven't stopped e-mail notifications for "followed" discussion yet, so I'm still getting lots of e-mail from Duolingo, and I'll follow up on some of those from time to time.
Knocksedan, you've been a great asset to -at least- the Irish learner community here, and I'm very grateful for that.
You have my best wishes with you, and I await your full return! (Only one more reason to hope Tree 2.0 shows up, and soon!)
Cinnte go bhfuil fáilte romhat! (I hope I got that right! I'm ever grateful Knocksedan, and I'm not saying goodbye to you!)
goodbye Knocksedan. All the best for whatever lies ahead in the furure.Thank you for all the help you have given me and so many other learners along the way and for putting up with us when we had difficulty understanding things
I really did mean what I said about "people at the very beginning of their journey with Irish have been valuable teachers" - it wasn't just plámás (another one of those words that you will encounter in English in Ireland on occasion). Thinking about other learners questions has improved my own understanding of certain aspects of the language.
Hear hear! So far I'm only at level 19 and my two years doesn't end until next February, so I'm still learning, still benefitting from Duplingo. My eternal gratitude to you, Knocksedan, and to the other regular contributors to the discussions. Your help and your insights are invaluable. You will be sorely missed.
