(FIXED) Almost every skill in Russian tree not golden anymore.
Yesterday, my Russian tree was golden up until the point where I left off on the "Arts" skill. Today, I log on and find that almost every skill needs strengthening. A lot of times, it's only one or two skills that need strengthening, but why have so many skills stopped being golden in just one day, even when I've been keeping up my streak for the past months?
EDIT: It seems that this problem has fixed itself - all the non-golden skills have returned to golden.
It looks like this is happening to a lot of people, maybe everybody, in a lot of different languages. I had almost 200 skills (in 4 different languages) lose their golden glow overnight. I've started to work through things again, and it sometimes takes two practice sessions to get back to 5/5 strength, especially since there seem to be a fair number of new words being introduced.
And you know what? That's a good thing!
I know just as much Italian, Spanish, French and German as I knew the day before yesterday. If the vocabulary has expanded, meaning that I know a lower percentage of the word list than before, then that's an opportunity to learn some more words. And review a bunch of grammar that I only sorta-kinda learned on the previous pass.
From a gaming perspective, this change was a REALLY unpleasant shock. I like my trees golden!! But clawing back my golden skills over the next month or so is bound to really improve my fluency in all four languages.
Which, in the end, is what Duolingo is for.
Some of my skills seem stubborn too. I had to strengthen them twice or even three times to register. For others, I’ve managed to gild two in one go. So yes, it’s going to take a month or more but it will be done eventually, and I think I might learn something new from it.
One hour ago, my course "German for English speakers" was gold. Now 37 skills are not gold anymore.
Reason: This course was updated a few weeks ago. I made it gold again within two days. That's why I have to strenghten so much in once.
Please, have also a look at this discussion " I just had about half of my completed French tree drop out of 'gold'"
An update would explain the change. What I'm trying to understand is why completing the strengthening exercises several times in a row (with 100% correct answer rate) doesn't change the color back to yellow? Anyone is having the same issue?
That's a different issue. This is a bug that appears from time to time. If you re-do the lessons, the skill will strengthen.
Agreed, seems to be a bug. And now the fluency indicator went dow )))) Oy vey ;))
Hugh, I like Kriska am not getting the color back to yellow after doing the specific sections twice.
Also have a friend who lost 100 day streak even though she had a streak freeze in place and had practiced daily. Now it happened to her again yesterday. Ugh.
I suspect it's not a bug, but a feature. Your dial goes down then you have a bunch of words that you no longer know. But when DL introduces some new words to the program, you have ZERO credit for those words, bringing your average down. Depending on how many of these words there are, it might take a few rounds of strengthening practice to get to full strength on a skill.
The plus side (from a gaming perspective) is that most words are used in multiple skills. So while working on skill X, you're also getting credit for improving all the other skills that use the same new words. Sometimes (not often) I get upgrades in two skills simultaneously.
I'm not actually noticing new words. Maybe one or two, but not enough to do what you're saying. The progress bars were all one below. As far as motivation to continue goes, this must be a massive blow. The best part of Duolingo is that you feel like you've been working toward something and making progress. It is all good for language learning, but to think of needing to do 75+ lessons and not being able to keep on top of it very intense in a competitive app market.
A lot of people have been having this problem recently. Try strengthening the one furthest down your tree, sometimes it does all the skills at once. If this does not work, I might have another idea.
My other idea is what Pentaan said (course being updated), as other people seem to have had the same problem with some courses.
Since that is most likely the case, I'll have to strengthen each skill now. At least I'll have some good review.
I got the same problem with Italian and I opened a ticket with DuoLingo support. Looks like an update of some kind that came out today.. Someone else reported same issue with Spanish.
Moving my report to this thread at mod request, original here: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/22207988$comment_id=22216279
As of the evening of the 16th I had no rust on the Spanish or Swedish trees. Romanian had some (9 or 11, originally I said 11 but I'm pretty sure I'd gotten it down to 9), but not much. 11 hours ago I logged on and almost everything is rusty. The 3s seem to be the Romanians that were rusty on Sunday.
I’m also experiencing the same issue. Most of my older trees and especially the completed trees have shed a lot of gold. The newer trees (e.g. Norwegian) and the ones where I do a lot of practice and few new lessons (e.g. Hebrew) still seem golden.
From a fully golden Romanian tree (level 13) to all but two changing. Some skills even dropped two bars overnight. :( 190xp this morning just to get 9 lessons up to full bars as some needed doing twice!!! One has gone down already!!! 25 still need 'strengthening' despite being full strength yesterday!!! I understand that skills and vocab need revisiting but something's gone wrong... I need to do other things other than trying to learn Romanian!!! I hope it's just a glitch as it's made a fun activity a real chore!!!
This happened to me too! I'm on a 175 day streak, and had just 3 lessons to go to finish everything. My tree was totally gold yesterday morning, then I log back on in the afternoon and 50+ pods needed strengthening! One that I just complete hours before, was 2 bars down. I feel crushed, but I started to do lessons like crazy, but now a couple of these pods won't turn gold, even after I do them (one's that were one bar short.) This is really a motivation killer.
Same with my French. I do not see a big issue to repeat some skills, but so suddenly and so many skills in one day became weaker? what's tomorrow then?
I did notice some new phrases doing an exercise in French, so maybe the lessons were all updated with new material, hence why our strengths all dropped?
I too have the same issue with my Russian tree of nearly 32 skills needing strengthened. It happened right after I completed my daily XP requirement for the day. Only had a few skills that needed strengthened, then after doing 3 skills it suddenly changed to 32 skills that needed attention. Has anyone heard anything back from the Duolingo support people?
Woke up this morning to see my tree looked like a Christmas tree... with maybe only 1/4 of it gold, some 45 or so not gold now, vs yesterday there were only a few that were not gold? Man o man lol Oh well guess I do it every day anyway. but I can't imagine how long it will take to ever get the tree gold again. this is in Spanish for English speakers flavor.
I had 14 skills in my Guaraní tree degild in the blink of an eye.
I'm crossing my fingers it's an update to the obviously flawed strengthening algorithm. If I work through a skill enough to actually learn it, even just passively, it won't degild for months. The mere fact I managed to get it into short term memory on some particular day hardly means I've learned it for the duration (to say nothing of getting the words into active recall). Any change to the algorithm to deal with this issue could obviously bring about a whole lot of degilding.
And now I've just had fourteen skills regild on a single lesson (not even a strengthen). I'd be curious if these massive regildings turn up more frequently for a while as things sort themselves out from this change to the algorithm as experienced by many.
Actually my comment was on the Spanish Tree. It's still a problem went from about all gold to few gold. been trying to catch up but it's about hopeless. think I took 4 to gold today only to then find 4 more (different ones) drop out of gold. and my goal is only 2 lessons per day. Needing 8 strengthening lessons per day just to stay even isn't workable.
Duolingo wants more of your eyeball time. It can show you more ads that way ;) Whether you let its pixel color ploys discourage you is your own decision. If it motivates you to practice a bit more while still fulfilling your life responsibilities, it would seem little ill has come of it.
Problem is of the 25 some odd groups that are no longer gold, I'm prob wasting time practicing lessons that I know pretty well vs what I really need the most practice on. and saying I need to go back and practice the flirting and idiom bonuses??? give me a break. As far as ads go. I'm on a pc, and far as I noticed I don't see any ads
I haven't seen ads on the PC either, but people with the new website version have said they're there.
If you're confident you've mastered the skills that are degilded, all the better, at some point spaced repetition runs its course, and you just don't need it any more. If you know, say, 80% of the degilded skills but 0% or 40% or whatever of the skills further down, it's probably not entirely off base to get a reminder about the remaining 20% further up. But that's also why I mention Duolingo's incentives. The system is designed to retain new users for as long as possible, and that's probably on average a question of getting them to stay three weeks instead of two or four weeks instead of three. You're unquestionably way beyond where the average user gets (for one, you're using the PC version, which already makes you highly non-average), so, unfortunately, you just can't expect the system to work as well for you.
Oh I've mastered few skills, spanish certainly not being one of them lol. what helped before that I'd get highlighted lessons of things I really wasn't good at but if forced me to do those. Now I don't even remember which lessons I hated the most... I've always tried to keep the tree gold working top down.. maybe I'll try working from the bottom up to get it to behave differently.. Dulingo is a good program. It surprises me how much I've learned and how less often I even look at hints these days.. Just odd it worked well for so long till the day the tree went from almost all gold to mostly not.
As aroboticist linked to, this presumably all comes about because the end of a test of an altered strength algorithm. You'll probably have to do somewhat more to keep things gold going forward. It sounds like you have a lot of skills that are "marginally gold," so I bet if, say, you strengthened fewer of them each day but doing a bit more strengthening on each one, eventually things would get themselves back to at least a more stable condition than presently. Of course, maybe you're just in a fast decay test group or something.
