So, I was taught somewhere that "Füller" is pen, where does that fit in?

That's specifically a fountain pen, whereas a Stift is more general. Do an image-search and you'll see.

Stift is a peg. When did German's begin using this as a word for pen? When in college in the 80s we were only taught "der Kugelschreiber" as the word for pen. A long word, yes, but it made sense in the way German words were formed. Now, 30 some years later, and well along in my Duo lingo studies I find they also use Stift. Is this just vernacular or regional?
