Hello everyone, I noticed something in dutch that wasn't quite clear to me, and does not exist in German as far as I know.

I'm talking about the position of the modal verb when fixed together with a separable verb. For example I thought that the only exisitng translation to: "I know what I must ask my teacher" would be: "ik weet wat ik mijn leraar aanvragen moet (or: ik weet wat ik mijn leraar moet aanvragen"

but I've seen people who write it like that: "Ik weet wat ik mijn leraar aan moet vragen." this possibilty for example does not exist in German. Is it true or did I just understand it wrongly?

On the same matter, do one say in Dutch "aantevragen" or "aan te vragen"?

I hope that I was clear with my question, thanks

I think you are confused aanvragen is a different verb that what is used in your sentence.

  • Ik moet iets vragen - I have to ask something
  • Ik moet iets aanvragen - I have to apply for/request something

So the meaning is different.

  • Ik moet iets aan mijn leraar vragen - I have to ask my teacher something
  • Ik moet een formulier aanvragen - I have to apply for/request a form

So in the verb is not separated, in contrast with

  • Ik vraag iets aan mijn leraar - I ask my teacher something
  • Ik vraag een formulier aan - I apply for/request a form

To make it clear in German:

  • vragen = fragen
  • aanvragen = beantragen

The confusion probably comes from thinking aanvragen is the same as anfragen in German, which would also translate to vragen in Dutch or depending on context informeren.

Indeed. The grammatical question still holds though. Unlike in German, you can choose between:

  • Ik weet niet welk formulier ik moet aanvragen. - I don't know which form I should request.
  • Ik weet niet welk formulier ik aan moet vragen. - Ditto

They are completely equivalent. As for your last question, it would be:

  • Ik probeer een formulier aan te vragen. - I am trying to request a form.
