Maybe "johnny" has some slang meaning in English spoken somewhere outside the US???? I have no idea what they could be talking about.

I saw somewhere else in Duolingo that "johnny" could be UK slang for a condom? Perhaps a glove or "guanto" could take on the same meaning in Italian...?

That's right, johnny does mean that in the UK. That's why I wondered if it meant the same in Italian..

Yes, it does :) It's slang of course.

Gloves AND johnny? Guanti means both...?

"Guanti" should mean only "gloves". :)

In that case Duolingo needs to change its word hints!

You should send feedback on the word, but many words have pretty bad hints. I don't know how to improve the thing.
