Wow. Just wow. Just goes to show how much immersion meant to e̶v̶e̶r̶y̶o̶n̶e̶ some people.
Someone that knows about website building should make something like immersion and expand upon it. Make something dedicated to community-based translations and corrections for foreign language learners. Lang-8 will leave a hole in the market when it finally shuts down, as it seems the owner is abandoning it for a more profitable product.
There's a business lesson here, if Duo couldn't make it work and Lang-8 couldn't make it work, maybe it is just an idea that can't support a viable business model.
You can't sign up for a new account which means growth of the community (which is the basis of the website) is halted and will slowly die off. The owners are abandoning it for HiNative. If you already have a lang-8 account you can keep using it though.
Lang-8 is not shutting down, they temporarily closed registration in order to redirect people toward their new platform HiNative, it's just a marketing strategy, that's all.
Someone is making exactly that. I forgot who though. Their comment about the production of Immersion-like website is a comment on the Immersion post.
I think they have the same functionality on Italki, haven't they? The lang-8 thing, I mean.
