How do we type "Sia^n", the Welsh name, into an English sentence please?

You need to look up the details for your particular device.

On iOS devices you just keep a letter key depressed for a short while and the accented characters for it will appear in a pop-up menu.

In MacOS you can choose to use the Welsh keyboard layout - the same as British English layout except for characters which use the alt/opt key - to get the ŵ, â, etc using the Welsh layout you just type alt-w, alt-a, etc., and ï is alt-8, i. There are similar simple shortcuts for the acute and grave accents.

I think that one or other of the Windows extended keyboard layouts may have similar options, but I am not sure.

Yes, there is a Welsh extended keyboard in Windows.

To install it, in the Control Panel, go to "Region and Language", select the "Keyboards and Languages" tab, then add the keyboard "Welsh (United Kingdom) -> Keyboards -> United Kingdom Extended".

Once you have done this, to get, for example, ŵ, you hit either control-alt-shift-6 then w or AltGr-6 then w.

I have a question, though. On the iPad keyboard, how do you get ŵ? I can find everything else, but the 'w' key doesn't seem to have the press-and-hold thing going for it.

I think that on iOS you have to set Settings/General/Language and Region>Region to 'United Kingdom' to be able to use the ŵ and ŷ, and perhaps some of the other accented characters.

We have our iOS set to:

  • Region 'United Kingdom'
  • Keyboard 'English UK'
  • iPhone Language to include 'Cymraeg' and 'English UK', with 'Cymraeg' preferred, which gives you the calendar in Welsh, for example, and Welsh as the default language on some websites.

Odd. I already had it set that way, and it didn't work. Now it does.

Computers are like that. And I should know. I do IT support for a living.

As for the preferred language, I may try switching to Cymraeg from time to time (just as I have my watch set to display the time in Dutch), but I don't think my skills are up to the point where I could leave it that way for long. Yet.

How does this work for Google Chromebooks ? The manual supplied does not make this clear.

The accents don't work on my chromebook system. How do I get over it?
