What are your favourite German novels?

I recently moved to Germany, and thankfully I already spoke some German, but I'm looking for some good novels to increase my vocabulary with. I know that many students start reading Harry Potter in German, but I'd rather explore German culture in all its beauty, especially after seeing this video, which really motivated me:

Since I'm not interested in reading children's books I tried reading Kafka, but it was a little bit too difficult - my current level is somewhere between B1 and B2 - so I'm open to suggestions. Was sind eure Lieblingsromane? :D

I really enjoyed "Drei Kameraden" from Erich Maria Remarque. It takes place in Germany of 1920's but feels surprisingly contemporary and fresh.
