Weekly Incubator Update: Tracking Progress from March 9th to March 16th

For all of you who have been paying close attention to the updates, you know that the incubator this past week has had some massive progress and changes. The long awaited new tool sets for incubator developers has been released, and six new languages has been added to Phase 1 as reverse courses for English speakers. It also seems that they did not begin with a significant amount of progress complete as previous reverse courses has, however, combined with the new tools that were introduced and their previous experience, I would still imagine that the reverse process should be noticeably easier for the developers to create this time around compared to the original courses.

PHASE 1 PROGRESS:

German for Russian - 86% | 92% | 98% (+6)

Spanish for French - 80% | 82% | 84% (+2)

French for German - 71% | 77% | 82% (+5)

English for Chinese - 67% | 74% | 77% (+3)

German for Spanish - 59% | 64% | 69% (+5)

English for Hindi - 50% | 60% | 69% (+9)

English for Indonesian - 51% | 57% | 58% (+1)

English for Arabic - 23% | 27% | 41% (+14)*

English for Greek - 19% | 26% | 35% (+9)

English for Korean - 28% | 31% | 33% (+2)

English for Vietnamese - New:3% | 13% | 21% (+8)

English for Czech - New: 4% | 9% (+5)

Dutch for English - New:1%

Hungarian for English - New:1%

Turkish for English - New: 0%

Russian for English - New:0%

Romanian for English - New:0%

Polish for English - New:0%

Average Weekly Progress: +7.5% | +6% | +5.75%

*Great job Team Arabic for the massive amount of progress you all put in this past week! +14% way to go!

PHASE 1 LANGUAGE UPDATES:

We have a record shattering six new updates from the incubator development teams!

SomosTortugas from Team German for Russian says in English (but German and Russian versions are included at their incubator homepage)

Ещё немного, ещё чуть-чуть

Dear English speakers, I am not sure why you would be reading this, since this is a course that is completely free of English. But just for the sake of completeness I would like to tell you that our course is currently at 95%, and might appear in Beta in the next couple of days. As for the full story; I am sure you have heard of the big incubator update if you are watching the incubator courses. And you probably also have heard that it both brought us the ability to create reverse courses, and at the same time prevented a lot of contributors from working on their current courses. As of today, most things in the Incubator work normally again, which means that we are giving our best to bring our "German for speakers of Russian" course back on track. Bis bald! Expect us when you see us! SomosTortugas

jitengore from Team Hindi says:

Week 7: (68% complete) Two thirds done, less than one third to go!

डुओलिंगो हिंदी के शुभचिंतकों, अब दिल्ली दूर नहीं है! What an eventful week this was! The incubator itself underwent a round of incubation and now delivers an experience that is even better than what it has been before. It would soon be creating courses that teach languages that are not based on the Latin alphabet. That includes our reverse course. However, let’s stay in the present and talk about the forward journey :) I am happy to announce that we should be able to reach the Beta phase in March itself. This was the goal we had set ourselves back in January and we are happy to have been on track so far. Based on the interest expressed on our course page (https://www.duolingo.com/course/en/hi) as well as the scores of contributor applications that have been pouring in, we are hoping to get a lot of help from the community during the beta phase. Please stay tuned for more details in the coming two weeks. नमस्ते!

GunnyTunes from Team Arabic says (but also available in Arabic at their incubator homepage):

New contributor on board! مساهم جديد لمنهج الإنجليزية!

Hello everyone! After filtering the 160+ contributor applications we've received, we've finally come to a choice, and it was a very hard one with so many good applications. Thanks to everyone that applied! We'd like to welcome on board "Damascene" as the third contributor to the English for Arabic course! Her great grasp of Arabic and English grammar makes her a perfect match for this course, and her contributions so far have been nothing but insightful! Now you can expect the course to enter beta sooner. we'll keep you updated. :)

In a more recent update, he continues to add:

New contributor on board! مساهم جديد لمنهج الإنجليزية!

Hello people, I'm really glad to announce that as of today we've completed 40% of the required work to get the course into beta! Since the addition of Damascene to the team we've picked up the pace, and hope to finish sooner! (the current expected date of beta release is around the end of May). They grow so fast! :')

mptmpt from Team Greek (also available in Greek) says:

What an interesting week!

It has been a very interesting week. We have now new tools to work on our courses. The developers are doing a great job to fine-tune all the small details. They also created all the tools needed for the reverse courses to begin, so you will notice many new courses. You might notice also a small slow down in some courses, as we adjust to the new tools. About our course, we are happy to announce that we have finished 1/3 of the interface strings, and 500 words. We are also very happy to announce that we have two new members in our team, so please welcome ssurprize and Librasulus. They both joined the last few days (and they hit the ground running).

ckhadung from Team Vietnamese (also available in Vietnamese) says :

Second Update

Good day, everyone. So far, our team has finished translating all word images, 20% of interface translation and approximately 10% of the lessons. We try our best to keep the progress going fast while maintaining high quality of the course. Still, the goal is to make the course approachable for every Vietnamese fellows at all ages and from all regions. Thus we must provide as many translations as possible from multiple regional dialects. Lots of tasks to do, but making this course is enjoyable, for me personally :) I also notice there's a slight increase in Vietnamese users on Duolingo since the release of this course. That is amazing! Please help to spread this wonderful website to our society. Our fellows really need it :) Moreover, there have been lots of applications to contribute to this course, too. Thank you for your interest. We do need more helpers here to get the job done, and here are "something" we're looking for in the application:

Selcen_Oztuk from Team Turkish says:

Turkish for English speakers - it is more than just "reversing" the Eng-Tur tree

Dear cool people waiting for the Türkçe course! Our tree editor is here but we could not start creating the course yet. There are several technical problems which we hope that will be solved very soon. As Turkish grammar and sentence structure are very very different than English or any other Indo-European language, it will not be "that" easy to reverse the tree. If we use the same order and sentences used in the Eng-Tur tree, you will not benefit much from it. Therefore, it will take sometime to prepare the course but we will try to make it as awesome as possible! Meanwhile, you can check some basic grammar from other websites, or learn the extra letters we have in the Turkish alphabet ;) Sevgiler!

PHASE 2 PROGRESS:

I have completely revamped the way we may measure Phase 2 Beta to more accurately predict their progress. I am now using the same method I am using to estimate percentage complete using the "right click, then inspect" method, however, I found that I can gather similar data with courses in beta using the language selector page. The percentage complete shows it's "stability" level. It will be interesting to keep track of this number to see how this works and to determine if these percentages are a good indicator of how close they are to releasing the full version.

English for Russian - 95%

English for Dutch - 91%

English for Turkish - 84%

English for Hungarian - 73%

French for Spanish - 71%

English for Polish - 58%

Portuguese for Spanish - 47%

English for Romanian - 43%

English for Japanese - 14%

Spanish for Portuguese - 7%

SUMMARY

This is one of the most incredible weeks since the incubator was released last year. We have the long awaited reverse courses, this time for English speakers, and six were released all at once! I am hoping that at least one or two of these courses can finally be beta tested by us within the next couple months.

As far as last week's poll asking which language you would like to see next, the top 5 most requested languages were 1. Irish 2. Esperanto 3. Norwegian 4. Swedish 5. Latin.

With new language development tools added, and a flood of new languages now released into development, it seems that the language development process is getting closer to being more automated and running much smoother. I think that this year will see several dozens more of the most popular and requested languages, and a few niche and rare languages introduced toward the end of this year.

Thanks once again, J-Steven. Continuing with our tradition, here is Duolingo style tracking of our course’s progress. We are now projecting start of Beta Phase on 31st of March - in just a matter of few days!

Especially for a course that's totally different from English, I think it's pretty amazing that he and his team have gone at it as consistently as they have.

It is all team-work, J-Steven - am quite proud of the team! And yes, for the bottom half of the tree, we are more often finding that the literal translations sound unacceptable and we are forced to think hard for the natural translation :)

Also the natural construction of sentence between the two languages is quite different (sometimes it is more closer to Japanese). This will be somewhat of a challenge for the learners. But after the first few lessons, the difference in the structure will get ingrained in the brain.

Is this graph a feature in Incubator or you created this yourself? I don't seem to find it anywhere and my graph in Vietnamese course is quite simple. If so, I think it's quite amazing you track your progress in that detail.

Ckhadung, I have created it to help monitor our team's progress and have found it quite useful. If you would like to use such a tool for your course, feel free to ping me on the Incubator chat. I will be happy to share it with you. It needs very basic working knowledge of Excel 2007.

Today is Holi, the festival of colors! Since Duolingo's Incubator has become much more colorful very recently, I thought of preparing this animated gif to document the Incubator colors. Here's wishing lots of colors (and new languages) in your life!

Whoo-hoo! Thanks for these every week, I look forward to them :)

As far as the reverse trees go, it would not surprise me if they are actually more difficult to create than the original trees. They'll need all new voices, alphabets and general pathways. That said, after the first course is done it'll be pretty easy to make it from other directions. Still pretty excited but I am understandably patient :D

Yes, in an effort to minimize all the information to the most useful ones for the majority, I made the decision to cut off some of the other languages to maintain brevity, since there were so many updates this time around. For those that had their native languages cut off, I did put a disclaimer in parenthesis saying that native version is available on their incubator homepage.

No, that it is the automated estimation system's fault. Once some more time has passed, and they have made more progress, it will start to be more accurate.
