Why is EVERY POST you comment on put into your "Following" list?
This is a new development and a very ill-conceived one. I try to help people in the sentence forums and every single sentence I comment on tags itself as being followed.
As I have started to learn a new language, I usually "follow" sentence discussions that contain extremely useful help. This way, I can go back, after the lesson, and bookmark the link (this cannot be done from within active exercises).
Can anyone explain why Duolingo has seen this as a positive thing to do?
Because if you make a comment, you'll probably want to see the replies. I've never seen a forum system that didn't do the same.
There's a follow / unfollow button at the top of every discussion page - it only takes one click to unfollow a discussion, if you don't want to see your replies.
It has to do with your notification settings. I do not automatically follow every discussion I post in.
I just checked my notification settings and I only have three things I can check. There used to be a lot more. I'm not sure you can "turn off" the automatic follow now that the notification options have been reduced.
You might want to open a bug report on that. https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204728264-How-do-I-report-a-bug-
Interesting. I still have all of the settings - I can change what I'm notified about, so I could stop all notifications of followed posts, but there's nothing about automatically following things.
Have you been moved onto the new code? What does your notifications panel look like when you click on it?
You know you can unfollow these discussions by clicking on "following discussion", right?
You can do that after you comment on a post, so you don't get your list filled with unnecessary posts or get notifications of them.
Yes, I do now, but there was never a requirement to do that before and I have been here for 1.5 years. You had to opt-in to follow not opt-out!
Meanwhile, I have the incredibly arduous task of individually unfollowing a swathe of unwanted threads.
What a co-incidence - we've both been on the forums for about the same amount of time.
...and it's always automatically followed discussions that you post in, it's just that you haven't noticed until now.
Sí, es una extraña coincidencia☺.
Well, I'll take your word for it Hugh but I was sure it was not like that as I have only checked "follow" to opt-in (never to not "follow").
Maybe I'm just going nuts, or maybe I changed email notifications when Luis started screwing with the site back in January. The latter is probably the most likely scenario. I was about to uncheck it but it will alert me if I forget to unfollow a thread in the future.
¡Gracias por tu ayuda!
Hey Hugh, I just noticed why I didn't know it was happening. I just responded to a post in a thread but, before leaving the thread, I checked the "follow" button - it did not say "following", however, there it was in my "following" list.
So, to test a theory, I went to a garbage post and posted something equally insignificant. I then pressed "'follow" so I could then unfollow it - if you catch my drift - but it wouldn't let me. I needed to refresh the page first!!
Crikey, what a long winded procedure. Again, I vote for opting in to follow threads. No wonder the servers are working overtime!!
The shorter work round is to click the follow button (which will then say followed), and then click it again, to un-follow.
@ripcurlgirl: Hmmm. Either I'm misremembering, or this has changed recently. I've just been and checked - after I make a comment, the button changes automatically to say "following".
It sounds like it's working differently for each of us - are you on the new version of the code? What does the notification panel look like when you click on it?
I just looked at Lrtward's - I must be on the old code because it looks like this :
Before I get stuck on the new code, I had better double check my follows from now on.
I'm certain I wasn't automatically following everything before as well. Maybe it was an AB test?
Interesting. Look in the "followed" section of the discussions page - roughly how many posts are you following?
Not many now I spent half an hour a few days ago unfollowing. Maybe it's because I had notifications for when someone posts on activity off and turned it back on when activity ended
I don't have to refresh I can write a post enter it and immediately unfollow
This happens to me too since the update. Just remember to unfollow the discussion as soon as you post your comment (like i'm doing right now).
I used to get an automatic follow- then about a month ago, I started having to select 'follow discussion' if I want it followed. I don't remember changing anything, but it's possible I removed notification options...
So you and I appear to have same settings but I don't have to refresh I can post and unfollow at the same time
