Euskara batua (Standard Basque/euskera batua)

(more recent thread / hilo más reciente: Let's make Basque happen!)

(texto en castellano abajo)

I'd love to see a Basque course here. I've been studying with various methods (Assimil, Ikasten, Beginner's Basque, Colloquial Basque, etc. pretty much whatever i can get my hands on) for a little while now and am definitely not in the position to build a course from scratch yet, but it is something i'd like to do one day.

I'm curious if anyone else would be interested in working on a Basque course for Spanish or English speakers and what sort of audience it might have (ie. whether there's actually a demand for it other than just me).

Agur eta eskerrik asko!

Agur eta eskerrik asko!

I can speak and write basque fluently,I've just applied for it.Let's see if my application is accepted.

Thanks! Hopefully they get back to you!

WHERE CAN I FIND A GOOD BASQUE COURSE? WITH DUOLINGUO IT WOULD BE GREAT , BUT IT SEEMS THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING THIS LANGUAGE ( SHAME ON THEM FOR THIS!!!)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

The best resource for English speakers is, in my opinion, "The Basque Language: A Practical Introduction" by Alan King. Ikasten.net is free and covers a lot of material as well.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Olbapz

Please Aitor let us know how it goes, and if Basque will be considered. I'm planning a move to Cantabria the next year, just an hour from Bilbao, and I'm always amazed by the signage in Euskara. It is a very magical and exciting country, el pais vasco. Incredibly green and mountainous.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Golden_Owl

Hi Olbapz,I'm very sorry,I haven't gotten any answers to my application yet.I guess it's just a question of how many people have applied for it,if I am the only one they don't even take it seriously

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BryanAJParry

But there's got to be quite a few Basque speakers on DL.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

I applied for a Catalan course a while back (over a year now) and never got a response. It would be nice to know whether your application was "denied" or put on file for future use, but as it is i'm sure they get tons of applications and don't look into most of them until they decide to actually start a new language. A more concerted effort for Euskara would be nice. There's definitely a demand for it, though really there's a demand for almost every language out there. I haven't heard of many people sending in applications for Euskara, though. It'd be nice to get people together willing and able to work on a course.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/feiher

I've signed some weeks ago to get Euskara on Duolinguo, don't remember where, maybe in change.org. I don't know how to send them a request. yesterday I wrote on their fb page, but I don't think they even watch the site... (about catalan, duolingo has already that language available ) I don't understand how they support languages nobody speaks and don't want to support real ones, which deserve to be protected

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/EkaitzBarron

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/joralles

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/joralles

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Olbapz

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lamia91

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

Luego eliges tu(s) lengua(s) materna(s), puedes escoger entre "Basque" "Spanish" "Both" (ambos) o "Other" (otro).

Beste galderarik baduzu, mesedez idatzi eta zuri laguntzea saiatuko dut :) Milesker, Lamia91!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lamia91

Solizitudea bidali dut! Ea lortzen dugun :D

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BryanAJParry

I posted a thread on this myself recently. I have no real Basque skills so to speak, but I would LOOOOOVE to learn Basque on Duolingo. It is the single language I would like most on Duolingo.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

I agree, Euskara is the language i'd like to see most on Duolingo. There are several great resources already, some of them such as Ikasten are also free (and very comprehensive), albeit a bit dry in content. But if we continue learning now, perhaps some day in the future we'll be able to participate in the creation of the Basque course for others to use if it hasn't been started yet.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BryanAJParry

By the time I get proficient in Basque, the Internet probably won't exist anymore!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

It's really not that hard, it won't be a walk in the park that's for sure, but its grammar is super fascinating and unlike anything i've studied before. It's really interesting (i'd even say fun) to learn, and everyone is surprised at first and really helpful later when they find you're studying it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BryanAJParry

My plan is to reach a certain particular level in Spanish and Swedish, and then I will fully commit to Basque... just in time for DL to have brought the course out...?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

Good luck with both of those! I'd be happy to help out with Spanish if i can. I spend a bit of time at the http://how-to-learn-any-languages.com forum, in particular reading the different Spanish language learning logs.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BryanAJParry

Cheers crush, I'll check it out!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SteveLando

It's the most interesting living language in (western) Europe, so of course, I will learn it as quick as it will be possible through Duolingo.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

Awesome, Basque is a really interesting language. I also think it would work really well on Duolingo as the verb system is, while not necessarily complicated, really extense.

First we'd need to find someone to sponsor the course. I would be more than glad to help out but i'm still in the process of learning it and probably not the best candidate to write the course from scratch.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Eduardo_Dinis

Euskarak indartu ahalko dezan mundu guzian Duolingo bitartez, hori segur da! The basque language could be boosted in the whole world through Duolingo, sure! Heuscara ialgui adi mundura. Euskara jalgi hadi mundura. Basque, go out into the world.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PatxiRosado

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SinglePigeon

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mariasecolopez

También me encantaría un curso de euskera

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Juliette_OC

Yo estoy deseando aprender euskera.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/zrenteria

I would love to have a course in Euskara. My father's family has Basque origins, and I have always wanted to learn the language.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

There are several other quality courses available. The ikasten.net course for one is very thorough, though a bit dry. Alan R. King's The Basque Language is an excellent book (i've just started unit 19 out of 40) which covers a great deal and has more colloquial conversations than most textbooks. Well, at least once you get beyond the first few units. I'm also working on cleaning up Gorka's course for English speakers, if someone's interested in going through that i can work on it a bit more quickly. So far i've only done the first five lessons, but it'd be great if someone could let me know what needs more explanations, what isn't clear, what could be added, etc. Here's a link:
http://www.mirari.fr/DmZ3

Ah, i just realized that a few posts up there's a more detailed review of some of these courses :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/zrenteria

Thanks for the information! I hope that in addition to the resources you provided, Duolingo will add a course in the near future..

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

As do i, i'm not holding my breath but it would be great to see it make its way here. In the meantime, i've been working on something of my own which should hopefully be a more fun way of learning Basque than the Ikasten course.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Osirisapis

Bai, nire neba Josuk (jcartegarci1) eskaera bat egin zuen euskara kurtso bat prestatzen hasteko baina antza denez, oraindik ez dago horretarako asmorik plataformaren aldetik. If there happened to be an option to contribute or a group was created or something, please contact him. He's REALLY interested in creating one for either English speakers or Spanish speakers. Esker aunitz, crush, muchas gracias, thanks a lot :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Azais

I'll be definitely into it ! I tried to learn a bit of bask on memrise, but it's not like a real course. I'm sure you'll find people who can help build it. In France basque is not really spoken but it seems to me that the language is experiencing a "reborn" and more and more people have interest in it. I think it'll help french basks reconnect with the language. It'll be great !

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

Thanks, for the moment one of the most comprehensive courses is the Ikasten course (http://www.hiru.com/e-ikasi/idiomas/ikasten) but it's a bit dry and i think the Duolingo drills would be a good way to get the verb forms down.

And you're right, Basque is experiencing a rebirth, epecially in the Spanish side of the Basque Country (as France refuses to recognize Basque as an official language) more and more people are growing up speaking Basque at school and among friends. There are Basque schools in France, but it seems they don't get very much funding.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/zombifiedkafka

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/andrea_alday1998

Hola!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

Gracias!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Olbapz

Hey, I figured this would be helpful, but Catalan is taking this approach. A Catalan for Spanish speakers is being planned. Here's the conversation. Perhaps Basque(Euskara) can do the same thing. Instead of Euskara for English speakers, Euskara for Spanish speakers. At least it would put this language on the radar, and serve Spanish speakers who have Basque heritage or reside in the Basque region and want an additional resource.

https://www.duolingo.com/comment/7044941

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

That'd be great if it happened (in English, Spanish, or French). I applied for the Catalan for English speakers course ages ago but never heard anything back.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BryanAJParry

A Basque for Spanish speakers would be better than nothing, for sure.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Azure_Waters

Boy would I love to learn Basque!! :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

So would i, there are several very good resources already, but i'd love to have a place to learn and practice it here at Duolingo, too :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BryanAJParry

I'm loving the energy, crush. Can I ask why you have this passion for Basque?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

I really can't remember where i first got it in my head to learn Euskara. I lived in Spain for two years and fell in love with all of the major regional languages, Catalan/Valencian, Galician, Aranès/Occitan, and then Euskara. It's different from every other language i've studied, i read about its history, started listening to some Basque music (i love Gure lagunei (To our friends) by Urko, the first Negu Gorriak album, and even some Basque rap like Norte Apache), and even learned a little bit about ancient Basque mythology from the Ikasten course.

Also, the idea of identifying with a language more than national boundaries in the term "euskaldun(a)", literally speaker of the Basque language, is really interesting to me. I've read that even a non-native speaker who learns Basque well will be considered euskaldun bat by Basque speakers. I really want to speak it well some day :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BryanAJParry

Cheers for the info, crush, especially the music! I'll check it out. :-)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/osasti

I want to learn Euskara so bad! It's a very interesting language. Please, make this happen.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

If it doesn't happen here at Duolingo, i've been working on a method to learn Basque online which should hopefully get online by the end of the year :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scarlecchino

Oh, great news! Can't wait :) Unfortunately, I couldn't find enough sources before but I really want to learn :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

As an English speaker, there are a few good resources. I'd say Ikasten and Alan King's The Basque Language are all you need to really get started in the language. Gorka's course is pretty comprehensive, but it throws a lot at you at once. Beginner's Basque and Colloquial Basque are ok, but way too shallow in my opinion. The Assimil course (if you speak French or Spanish) is nice, really hard but nice, and found it really useful for getting used to understanding the spoken language. Unfortunately, the course is too short :(

Also, there aren't many of us, but the Basque forum at UniLang is a good place to go for help, questions, advice, etc.

My advice would be to check out The Basque Language, it was recently reprinted so is easy to get ahold of again. The Ikasten course is free, too, you just need to create an account. It goes from A1 - B2.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scarlecchino

Thank you so much for your help :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

No problem, i'd love to see Basque become more accessible and more people get interested, so i'm always excited when i see others interested in learning it as well!

I started a topic to start more actively compaigning for a Basque course here: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/7674974

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crazychelseablue

I'm dying to learn Basque! I'd love to see a course here on Duolingo but if you have any tips for learning it on your own that would be great too :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

There are a few good resources for learning Basque:

  1. Ikasten.net - The course is available in several languages, including English. It's a huge course that claims to take you from A1 all the way to B2. I'm currently working through the B1 level here. There are lots of exercises, texts, and audio, all for free. It's a great course with lots of material, the main issue with it is that it's a bit dry with the exercises. They also aren't very lenient, i believe most exercises only offer one correct answer, including for full sentences. Still, i've seen two people who used this course as there main study method, and they both have a very good command of the language. I'm also putting together a vocabulary course at Memrise (for the Spanish version).

  2. The Basque Language: A Practical Introduction by Alan R. King - I'm also using this book after reading lots of good things about it. I'm currently about a third of the way through. The format is nice and the way it covers the grammar is nice as well. There are lots of examples and i enjoy reading the dialogs at the start of each unit. Sometimes it feels like explanations are a bit lacking, but there's a huge section at the back of the book which talks about all the grammar points in more detail. I'd also recommend actually doing/writing down all of the exercises. It'll keep you from trying to progress too fast (and not internalize the grammar points) and well help things stick. Again, i've started a vocab course for this book as well.

  3. If you speak French or Spanish, there's Assimil's Iniciación al euskera - This was the first course i used and it was hard, much more difficult than any other Assimil course i've used. It's also unfortunately a bit short and doesn't cover as much as a normal Assimil course (hence the iniciación). Still, it covers quite a bit and will help you be able to process Basque more quickly. I just wish it were more complete.

  4. Gorka's Curso de euskera - I believe there's also an English version. It's a free PDF file that a learner of the language put together. I read through it a while back, but was lost by the end. It seems pretty comprehensive, but after the first ten or so lessons it really starts to zoom by. It's a great course, you just need to take your time with it otherwise none of it will sink in.

I'm also currently trying to think of a good way to teach Basque online, sorta like a more gamified version of the Ikasten course. I've got lots of ideas, but so far it's all pretty sloppy. Maybe soon i'll have something up and running and people can provide their thoughts on it. I'm really happy to see someone else interested in Basque, if you've got any questions (or just want a study partner ;)) get in touch!

EDIT: Also, there's a link to a more recent discussion i started in the post (currently) just above yours. Here's the link:

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/crush

Hey k4mpfh4mst3r, we're still waiting for the go ahead from Duolingo.

Kaixoo! Ni euskalduna naiz eta niri ere oso interesgarria izango litzateke euskara ikastaroa abian jartzea, munduko jendea hizkuntza gutxituetara hurbiltzeko.

Good luck studying basque, it´s a very nice language, forget about prejudices! For advice, at least for me, the best way to study a language is knowing its music and literature, so lets go!

Thanks for stopping by, Ziisnin! If you've got the time, it'd be great if you filled out an application form in the incubator :)

Kaixo, I've been following this thread as I too would like to see a Basque course on Duolingo. I just recently discovered ikasten online which is helpful with some advanced grammar but terribly slow to navigate...which leads me to another point. I can be pretty slow myself (a 76 year old with cataracts) but I think I could be helpful in your mission as I have an extensive vocabulary in euskara and am able to do translations. In fact, for nearly 10 years I have had an online website for learners. This doesn't mean I am a fluent speaker as i have limited occasion to use my Batua (unified Basque) but my reading is fairly fluid. I will leave a link here to my website if anyone thinks i can be useful in adapting a Basque course for Duolingo. https://euskalliburuak.blogspot.com/
