How long in general? As usual, the wiki has the answer – see the average duration in the second table http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Course

How long for Japanese specifically? They have been quite public about releasing to beta next month – even publicising it on Twitter. Please note that the alpha is currently iOS only and I've not seeing anyone say if the beta will be limited by platform or not.

See date here: https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/ja/en/status

And that date is (more or less) confirmed in the last WIU (Weekly Incubator Update) here: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/22179757 (although it doesn't look like they are reporting their progress)

I believe it depends on the amount of people working on it, the difficulty of the language, and how active the contributors are. I think that on average it takes two or one and one half years from when it starts to when it enters beta. I'm hanging in there for Japanese too!
