Losing streak before midnight

Hello! Have the rules changed since I last visited website? I've been using Duolingo on my Android for a while (the app is great, way better than a Windows Phone one!), today I had to practice later than I usually do. But when I run my app at 11:13 pm I saw a sad owl telling me I have lost my wager and a 130 days streak :c It's not that I am so obsessed with lingots and large numbers, just wanted to know, since when 11 pm is considered the next day? By the way, I haven't left my time zone for, like, 2 years.

Maybe this has to do with time zones, but I don't really know for sure.

I've noticed that the week changes at 11pm

That is because the week is calculated using the timezone at Duolingo's headquarters. This is to allow people in different timezones to be able to compare weekly totals.

Does it mean that I have to keep in mind what time is it in the U.S.?

Only if you are trying to reach a weekly goal. Normally your day will end at the same time every day you just need to know when that is

Shouldn't it end at midnight by default?

It does end at Midnight generally but if you move timezones it does not always change to your new midnight time. There are also anomolies with Daylight saving schemes (especially in the US where not all states implement them).

To get over any issues like this I have my XP target to 1 XP and always do 1 lesson/review as early possible so I am sure to meet my daily target.
