I'm sorry EleFigureSkate I totally agree with being safe online but if someone is offended by your religion that is there fault. Yes saying I believe in gd shouldn't offend someone who doesn't. You should say for example, "That's interesting I don't believe in gd but cool to know you do." You should not make others hide what they believe in. For example people don't say don't tell people your gender because it will offend them they just have to except that they are a girl or boy. So thank you for caring about others safety but saying don't tell others your religion will probably offend more people than them telling someone that they are christian or muslim. I do understand where you are coming from though. Thanks again EleFigureSkate.

Personal religious (and, indeed, political) beliefs have nothing whatsoever to do with language-learning. Things that have nothing to do with languages and language-learning do not belong on this website; there should be no need to mention such things here anyway.
It is not a question of making people hide their beliefs, but one of asking people to refrain from irrelevancies that clog up this discussion space.

I agree. However, if some type of cultural thing arose in a discussion (because languages are a part of culture) and it's appropriate , I don't think talking about religion is bothersome. Otherwise, I actually can't think of a moment where someone would intentionally talk about religion, unless it was a question about how to translate a sentence referring to religion...

Of course it's appropriate to discuss religions objectively as part of the cultures in which languages are used, but even then the circumstances under which it would relevant to pipe up 'I believe XYZ' would be very few.

Otherwise, I actually can't think of a moment where someone would intentionally talk about religion, unless it was a question about how to translate a sentence referring to religion...

The trouble is that some people have strongly-held beliefs that include the belief that they have a duty to tell other people about their beliefs. Much as I think they should be free to do this in general, I don't consider this website to be an appropriate place for it.

Yes I fully agree you should not forcefully tell someone about your religion to make them believe in g*d. I believe that you should be able to say you are Christian or Muslim and the people who decide to comment should be respectful. I do not agree with people who say you should never talk about your religion but I do feel that if people are going to then they should be mindful of others and how they feel, if they have let people or that person who is writing a discussion know that they do not like people talking about religion I feel that they should respect that. On the other hand if someone does not know that he/she does not like other people talking about religion then they should not get offended they should respectfully say 1 of 2 things. 1. You could convey that you would like them to stop talking about religion or 2. You could leave the discussion until they are done talking about religion. If a group of people are respectfully talking about religion then I feel that one person should not feel offended or mess up the conversation I feel that they should just leave the conversation alone. I want to say that you would not b offended by someone's race or gender but you would be offended by them just mentioning that they believe in God. I could understand being offended if they are putting you down for not believing in their religion or for not having one. But for someone just trying state something should not offend you. Thank You for Listening to what I have to write but I have to go. Thank You

Regarding religion. Having some discussion regarding religion in a cultural and language related context is ok and acceptable.

However, at the same time this is not a platform where people can/should spread or preach their believes. This is a language learning platform.

So again. A discussion involving religion in a cultural/language related context is absolutely fine. If someone doesn't like that they should just move along.

A discussion to spread/preach your believes is not ok. Still people should move along, but if someone creates a discussion like that they should not be surprised if someone voices their own opinion, or if the discussion at one point gets deleted.

To give some examples I've come across myself. These include discussions like:

  • I'm Christian/Muslim/Buddhist etc. who else is Christian/Muslim/Buddhist etc.?
  • Upvote if you love [god/prophet/holy person]
  • Thanks [god/prophet/holy person]

I don't think these need much explanation. They have nothing to do with Duolingo and (learning) languages, so they have no place here. I've also seen discussions asking for bible translations etc. in specific languages, which obviously are acceptable.

I know I keep repeating myself, though:

  • In a cultural/language (learning) context - Yes
  • Anything else - No, there are other platforms to do that

E12theK I fully agree the discussions regarding what religion you our is totally inappropriate, but if you are asking about translations it's fine. I do feel that the people who create the discussions will have to understand that someone will convey there opinion and I hope that the leader of the discussion will be respectful or ignore it.

It's true about being safe online... but Emily is right about the religion, am giving her a lingot for that post. The only problem I have with religion is how people get offended if it's not shared by others and it divides people when it shouldn't... in my opinion, religion is not a matter that should be separating friendships, ever. It doesn't hurt anyone... what you believe in or don't believe in, it's entirely your choice.

Sorry I just got back to ya!

Yeah, I'm a strong christian and I'm not ashamed of expressing my faith! But I'm afraid that on Duolingo its against the guidelines.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts though! But the thing is, I myself have have people asking me, "How can I become a Christian?" so I help them. Then FIVE SECOND LATER, that post is deleted. I know it sound ridiculous but its the truth. People don't think we should express our faith in anyway anymore. It's really sad. But like I said, Its against the guidelines, and IS unsafe. People could track you down and ehem ehem "hurt you" because of your faith. Well, I guess you would die knowing whats right. Anyway, thanks for commenting again.

Internet safety is super important. I have also created an Internet Safety Guide for members of the Duolingo Community.

If you need to find it in the future, go to the Popular Tab in the English-base general forum. The top post is "Duolingo FAQ & Wiki". The Internet Safety Guide is linked inside of there.

Considering I'm a blue bunny from the moon, I suppose someone else could be a dress :D

Also, your comment is so random. I'm guessing it is a play on words for "address"?

Religion, politics, etc are part of culture. Duolingo doesn't ban their mention so long as they are on topic and we don't break any of the Guidelines.

Ooohhh. That's scary :0. There ARE random creeps on here that ask LITTLE KIDS WHO DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER (not saying you are a little kid who doesn't know better.) Where they live, and they tell them, and the appear on the side of a milk carton with the label MISSING. It's scary. Nobody is safe in this world... too much child abduction.
