Has anybody else noticed there are no longer progress quizzes available in the Lingot store (for any language)? Not sure whether I was put in a test group, but I miss the quizzes very much.

Edit: I cannot even have access to my previous quiz scores anymore. :'(

Perhaps you are in a test group, I can still see the Progress Quiz in the Lingot Store while learning Spanish.

If you are comfortable with computers, here is a way to see which A/B testing groups you are in:

  1. Make sure your browser window has focus by clicking anywhere inside the website.
  2. Press F12 to open up your browser's Console.
  3. Type duo.user.attributes.ab_options and press Enter.
  4. Look at the list returned. Each group has a colon in front of it, followed by a Boolean value (true or false).
  5. The ones that say true are the testing groups you are in.

Edit (May 2017): I have just received the new version of the website. It's very likely that you were put in a testing group. I miss the progress quiz too. The only thing I appreciate about the new website is that the landing page for a skill is nicer and that the Activity button (now useless) is gone.

do you know how you would check if you had a computer that didn't have a F12 key?

https://www.duolingo.com/NoNoEsImposible

This should work for most browsers on devices that don't have an F12 key:

  1. Right-click anywhere on the website and click Inspect Element.
  2. Click on Console. On the most popular browsers, it should be one of the tabs on a multi-tab interface.
  3. Follow steps 3, 4, and 5 from my previous instructions

what happens if I change any of them?

If you set any of them to a different value, I think it'll be reset when you reload the page. I've tried a few simple hacks, and haven't got any luck so far.

Me either. and, it doesn't reset if you check the "save log" or something like that box I don't think, could be wrong

I still have the progress test (on the old code), so I am not in the group, but there certainly is an A/B-test going on, seeing as my console gives me this: web_remove_quiz_experiments: false; As for the new code, they might bring the quiz back at a later time, once everything is running

Thanks for the tip, NoNoEsImposible! Turns out I am in a lot of test groups. Not sure which one is affecting the progress quizzes, but I hope to see its return soon!

I can see the progress quizes in the Lingot store so I guess you are part of a test group to have it taken away.

I still have the quiz; I'm still on the old script, however. I can't see the rationale behind taking away the quiz; I don't think any staff updates have mentioned the removal of this feature.

Is there anyone on the new website script who still has the quiz? If any such people exist then we should know that it is an ongoing A/B test rather than a settled decision.

I do vaguely remember them saying they were removing it because it wasn't really engaging people, which is a bit frustrating as I was going to use that as my metric for when I had studied enough of one language and could move on to the next one.

Lots of people think the Progress Quiz is a waste of Lingots. The truth is, it is a waste until you buy multiple quizzes. When you can see how you improved over a certain span of time, it is very rewarding and definitely worth the pricey expense.

Unfortunately, people who have a problem with something tend to be a lot more vocal than people who don't have a problem with something, but I'd think the Duolingo staff are bright enough to figure that out. Anyone who can maintain such a large language learning website is definitely hard-working, and deserves my respect.

I think they ran an A/B test that told them people without it were more engaged. But since the vast majority of people don't use it, I don't see a fair way to measure that.

Also, sidenote, since they're always running so many A/B tests, how are they ever certain that it's one test and not an accumulation of others that's causing a difference?

That kind of problem can certainly develop. When they do the random assignment to treatment and control groups, they probably check that they're balanced on treatment/control assignment for other tests. Probably a lot of the tests have much bigger control groups than treatment groups, so that would make things easier. You can get statistically significant results from 10,000 users quickly enough, and it'd hardly be a flicker in the overall figures.

The progress quiz hasn't been written for the new version of the site yet.

You can tell whether you're on the new code by clicking on the notification icon at the top right of the page - if the notification panel appears directly under the notification icon, you're on the old code, but if it appears over the middle of the page, you're on the new code.

Wanting this back also. I can still see it in the menu if I click on "Words" in top nav. Then I click on "Quiz History" and hit a 404 error page. Nice!

Just checked the test groups, if you follow @NoNoEsImposible 's instructions, and you expand the code and see 'web_remove_quiz_experiment: true' I am almost 100% sure you are apart of the test group that removes the practice quiz from the store. By the looks of it, there are many different test groups which I am apart of, if you are curious, this is worth looking into.
