Speaking Exercises Not Appearing

I've noticed that for the last few weeks, I haven't gotten any speaking exercises for my French lessons.

This applies to the App and the web site (Firefox and IE). Neither is showing any.

Is this an option I turned off by accident? I've been going through my settings and account, but don't seem to be able to see anything that might have affected it.

I'm doing 50 points a day, so I should be seeing some speaking exercises.

Update: It's been 10 days, and there has been no improvement to the issue, and no reply from Duolingo. This is a MAJOR issue as a key feature of their program is broken.

If I don't hear from them by Monday, I'll submit another bug report. Might have to do it multiple times until they get on this.

My speaking questions disappeared a little over two weeks ago. I never turned my microphone off so I know that's not what started it. I have followed all suggestions made by Duolingo offered in the HELP forum also, but to no avail. I thought I'd let you know I'm going to file a bug report also and hopefully get some results.

This has happened to me too, both with Firefox and Safari. Did you get a solution?

May 9, 2017

Not yet. I've submitted a bug ticket to Duolingo, but they haven't replied yet.

I have submitted another bug report. I suppose I'll just keep submitting a report every now and then until they fix it, or respond.

Hey Andrew. On another post an admin stated that speaking exercises are currently only available on browsers that support Web Speech API. I downloaded Chrome to my PC and did my lessons from that browser and they finally re-appeared. I did follow instructions from Duolingo Help page regarding when using Chrome to make sure you click on ALLOW which you'll be asked when first speaking question comes up. Good luck!

The same happened for me in Swedish. For the Web Version, apparently they're disabled for now due to some bugs (I can not confirm if they're actually disabled, but they seem to be). But still, that doesn't explain the exercises not showing up on Android.

I've sent a bug report too, but as it seems, they won't read it as well.

All I can think of is that you turned your microphone off/denied Duolingo access to your mic. I'd recommend checking on those. But, if the issue persists, submit a bug report here.

Thanks, I did try that. I even turned it off, then back on again. Still nothing.

May 3, 2017

I turned off the speaking once and it has never worked again.

are you sure you're doing the lessons if you aren't doing the lessons and you're doing the test, then you don't have any speaking

August 25, 2017

Yes, it's during the lessons.

I'm having the same problem in Italian, and it worked before. It's really annoying.

Any updates on this? I used to be active on Duolingo almost a year ago, I recently started learning again and see that I am not getting any speaking exercises. I am on Safari, please advise.

So microphone exercises work only on Chrome, thank you!

June 26, 2018

Me too! Where is it?

December 11, 2018

For anyone coming across this question, speaking exercises only work in Chrome currently (the Microphone setting appears only there in your settings as well).

March 17, 2019

I'm in both Chrome on my PC and the Android app, and I've never gotten a speaking exercise. The microphone is enabled and everything in both places!

For mobile version, I think this happened because of the latest update that changed everything. For example, the whole UI, the audio system and even the scoring system have changed! I mean, if you do the test at any level, you will only receive 20 XP!!! (instead of getting the score of whole courses per level)

Same here, Android and chrome studying Arabic and Japanese for about a week, I haven't had a single speaking exercise yet (mic switched on , permissions enabled). Any advice anyone?
