Great article, great post. Number 2 is my favorite, but then again, I like all of them. :-)

As a czech native, I do not agree with untranslatability of "lítost". Well, this word can be used in lot of context, but common translation to english is simple "I am sorry" (Je mi to líto) in a moment, when we do not applogize, just express we do not like the situation (as well). Generally, "lítost" is quite close to "compassion"...

Lítost is always in these lists; it's a tradition, like "Schadenfreude" and "saudade" :-). I suspect it's because Milan Kundera's The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, which was quite popular in the English-speaking world, has a long section about the meaning of lítost and how (according to him) it has no equivalent in other languages. But who knows whether he actually thought that, or whether it was just a convenient device for the novel. And of course, once a word enters one of these lists it never leaves, because they are just recycled endlessly between websites looking for cheap content.
