"Discuss sentence" no longer working on Safari / OSX
Button doesn't do anything when clicked, on Strengthening exercises at least.
Maybe you are now on Duolingo's new web version?
In Duolingo's new web version, the sentence discussion opens in a new window. So you have to disable the pop-up blocker of your browser.
This is the link to what I see in my browser, Firefox for Linux
My ad-blockers don't cause any trouble (AdBlock plus and Ghostery)
Thanks Pentaan - this is indeed the problem - I don't have an adblocker but Safari blocks popup windows by default.
To resolve this (sadly you can only do it for all sites) in Safari on OSX, go to the Safari menu -> Preferences -> Security and uncheck "Block pop-up windows" under "Web Content".
Thank you, parsingphase. Unfortunately, if that's the only way to access the discussions going forward, I guess I won't be discussing anything any longer. DL team, I agree that this is a very poor decision and one which you might want to rethink. Question to anyone who is following this: I am now getting ads at the end of a strengthening exercise, both on the app and on the web version. If the problem accessing the discussions is the Safari default block on popups, then why are these ads getting through?
Are they really popups, though? I have the old site still, and Chrome is set to block popups, but still if I click on e.g. Pentaan's Mozilla link above, it opens in a new tab, and the sentence discussions appear "in front of" the main Duolingo page. It looks kind of like a popup, but it's clearly a bit different since the main Duolingo page is grayed out while it appears.
Yes, piguy3, you've described exactly what used to happen with my web version as well - and nothing else seems to have changed. It's only within the last couple of weeks that there's no longer any access to discussions. It would be great if someone from the DL development team could weigh in here with some feedback, please
Replies from Duo staff are extremely few and far between. You might try a bug report. A few months ago they took down the sentence discussions for highly variable amounts of time. Maybe that's happened again, although it certainly seems to be less widespread (or, at least I haven't seen as many mentions of it percolating up in the forums).
If you want to access a discussion for a specific sentence, you can copy it into Google (add quotation marks). That'll usually find it. It can help to add the translation to the search, as sometimes a sentence appears in more than on e tree.
Thanks so much for the "bug report" tip, piguy3; much appreciated! I'll give that a shot. It'll certainly help to be able to access a discussion, but it's nonetheless frustrating that it's taking so long to fix.
Update: Thanks for the feedback all! We've made a change that should make this work now even on browsers with popup blockers.
Thank you so much, karint; I just tried it and it's back! The discussion forum adds a particularly useful dimension to these lessons so thanks to all for fixing this. :-)
Great! We're still catching all the bugs and things missing from the new website (it was rewritten from scratch, so there are still a lot of little things to fill in). We do appreciate everyone's diligence and patience :)
Great news, thanks! Any chance that the review panel at the end of lessons, progress quiz, or ability to change among courses from different base languages in settings were just temporary omissions from the new website and will be coming back?
parsingphase, I am having the same problem on Safari, OS X. There is also no longer an option to report a problem that isn't listed - so here I am.
Same problem here and also my translating from audio doesn't work now---I can't progress!
It might be a new issue, or it might be a longstanding intermittent bug. Today it seems to have been a bit bad. I randomly do and don't have access to the discussions: either to read or start a new one.
I think they get harder to access when traffic levels are high; they've been known to disable them for large numbers of users in recent months.
